Brown discharge before period

Hi all :)

Does anyone ever get brown discharge before period?

I am not due on until Saturday and starts today with brown discharge x

Yes. My period has followed this pattern the last couple of years, since I turned 39.

3 days of brown spotting/ light bleeding, then proper period for another 3 or 4 days

How old are you?

It’s low progesterone that causes brown spotting. Progesterone maintains the uterine lining. If there is no adequate supply the lining “fails” easily and causes spotting.

High stress or acute stress is usually a cause because the precursors for the hormone progesterone are also used for adrenaline and cortisol (stress hormones) and your body will prioritise those first.

Yes, perfectly normal for me now, I just class it as part of my period. Brown, 3 days of red with some clots, then brown again.

I thought it was just oxidised (because slow
flowing) period blood?

Yep, same here. For the last couple of years I’ve also had a weird thing where my period finishes, I have one clear day then one more day of bleeding. Every time.

I am so glad to hear other women have this too! I tried explaining to GP and gynaecologist (not because I was especially worried but because I had other stuff going on too) and they both totally made out like it wasn’t even a thing and they didn’t know what I was talking about.

My fertility tests were fine though and I’m currently pregnant so I don’t think it’s anything to worry about ladies.

I’ve had 3 DC (4 pregnancies) so I don’t think it means anything is wrong.
Do some women just start bleeding? I like the fact I have some brown staining before my period, it means I’m not caught off guard.

I’ve had this last week. Usually I just start.

I’m still going to ring the dr as I have other gynae issues.

I was going to post about this, then I found this thread..... Since having the Mirena last August, I have like 6 days of brown spotting and then a normal period. It's annoying, I think I prefer the shorter heavier periods pre mirena.

Hi Ladies, I know no one’s posted since last year but is there any updates?

since a miscarriage last Feb in 2021 all my periods I’m having 5-7 days of brown discharge / spotting before. I’ve had so many blood tests and even paid for a hyterscopy and endometrial biopsy last month but nothing is coming back from them. I was just really hoping for them to find something so fix then I could hopefully get pg again. The Dr reassured me the surgery would be therapeutic for my lining and likely stop the spotting but it hasn’t :(

Hello; I’ve just come across your message I’ve had the exact same, 7 days of brown discharge before my period started two years ago after a miscarriage. I’ve also had blood tests, scans and nothing coming back, did you ever discover the cause? X

@Emma1399 ive only just seen this as I’ve been trying to research again! I guess I’m a bit clearer now - started IVF and I have adenomyosis. :( had a lap last week and I don’t have endo but adeno is like endo but in the uterine muscle. Mine must be severe as I get a whole 6/7 days brown spotting then now a thicker more clotty period. It’s been 2.5 years since my MC and still no luck. What about yourself? Xx

@loz2467 I have seen your name on so many posts whilst I have been scouring mumsnet for answers on my short luteal phase and struggling to concieve no2. I really wanted to see if you had success? I hope you don't mind me asking xx
