Bleeding after a hysterectomy (TMI)

I had a full hysterectomy ( everything out ) 8 days ago, and had very little bleeding vaginally after 48 hours.

However, the last few days I’ve been having awful painful spasms in the perineal area, as well as feeling like I have the worst cold ever ( not COVID ) with hot flushes from the menopause. All expected as par for the course, but this morning I randomly started bleeding. It’s not heavy as yet, but I just wondered if anyone else had this?

Barely bleeding at all after surgery then stopping, then the bleeding restarting a short while after? Is this something I should be concerned about?

I’d phone and ask just to be on the safe side. Is it brown old looking blood or bright red? I think fresh bleeding would be more concerning.

I had a full hysterectomy three weeks ago and was warned on my follow up phone call that I could get some brown gunky old period looking blood at some point especially if having sex. The nurse said to be aware it could happen.

Hope they can reassure you and you feel better soon.

Thank you @DinoMamasaurus it’s pinky watery blood at the moment, not bright red.

@StewPots I am exactly the same. Had a full hysterectomy on 19th Oct. Very little bleeding but yesterday and today some more, red blood, not brown or gunky. It is also watery. Has yours stopped now?

@changeoflife sorry lovely only just saw this… no it’s still ongoing and I’ve become increasingly unwell over the week so went to GP and I have an infection ( swab taken, antibiotics prescribed ) and just for fun I also have a secondary ear infection making me feel like my head is going to explode so all fun here!

@StewPots sounds like your life is pretty much the same as mine at the moment. My bleeding has continued so I called the GP yesterday who said its most likely coming from the internal stitches that are not healing as they should. At this stage the blood should be browner, older blood, not red, fresh blood. Basically back to complete bed rest and call them again in a week if it hasn't got better.

Add to that I've got an eye infection that antibiotics aren't clearing up. Oh and one of my keyhole incisions is infected. Seriously. It feels like I'm falling apart!!

The one bit of good news is that the HRT is working and I've not had a single hot flush or night sweat since starting the patches. I had thrush too which has completely cleared up.

@changeoflife oh I’m sorry to hear that, sounds absolutely rotten for you :( I really hope things improve for you soon. Yes bright red blood is one of the things to look out for. Mine goes from red to brown at mo, but I went to GP I’m on co amoxiclav to cover everything g for now then may need different ones depending on swab results.

It’s my birthday this weekend and my DS next week so it’s certainly put a dampener on things! DP had planned a nice lunch at “our pub” tomorrow but if I’m still like this I won’t be going anywhere!

Like you too on the plus side, I’m on HRT tablets and had no hot flushes or other typically menopausal symptoms and mentally at least I feel a lot better without the horrific pms rollercoaster I’ve been on for years!

Sending gentle hugs to you and it’s nice that we can support each other in a way through these challenging times!
