Mirena plus combined pill - anyone do/done this?

I had a Mirena fitted last summer to sort out heavy periods, but I’ve never really settled on it. I had a pelvic ultrasound last week, as my periods are lasting about 14 days - 3/4 days of spotting, a 7 day period, then more light spotting again for 3 or so days then nothing for 2 weeks (until the next one starts!) They’re painless and not really a problem but ideally I don’t want such long bleeds. (My smear is up to date and blood tests/swabs done last summer while they were investigating the heavy periods were all fine).

Anyway, the ultrasound was all fine. The GP mentioned some women who have annoying Mirena-related bleeding take a combined pill alongside it, which can shorten periods. Has anyone done this? Most people I know who’ve not liked the coil have just had it removed so I don’t have anyone to ask IRL.

totally jealous of all the women who have their periods stop completely when they have a Mirena fitted

I had the same experience as you. The coil also gave me BV and yeast infections. I was put on the pill and it worked to regulate the bleeding. No more periods.

I opted to get the coil removed and go in the pill due to recurring yeast infections. Also the coil made me bloated and generally anxious.

Once removed and past the horrific bleeding it caused ( dr didn’t tell me this) all was ok. Pill regulated me - did take 9 months. Anxiety reduced. I think the anxiety was due to never knowing if I would bled or spot.

Feel much better. Coil was a bad decision for me.

Thanks so much for your reply - I’m glad you’ve found something that works for you! I had horrible acne on my neck when my coil was first fitted, and weird stabby pains in my boobs (checked out and all ok). That’s all settled but I’ve just been left with the annoying spotting either side of my period. I might give the pill a try (although knowing my luck it’ll probably trigger constant spotting) Confused

Give it a try. I had more spotting days than not. It did solve my issue, but in the end want just one form of hormones. I also got terrible acne and boobs got massive. Coil was not for me

I had similar with the coil although they were painful (more painful than they'd ever been without it) and my GP tried me on the combined pill as well to try and stop the bleeding but it didn't really work and I had a migraine after 3 weeks on it so had to stop taking it. Then I had some epic bleeding incident not long after which might or might not have been related and happily the damn coil bled itself out!
I just don't get on with anything hormonal. I've tried the mini-pill since loosing the coil and that made me bleed for over 10 weeks (then I stopped taking it because quite frankly I was sick of it!).

Thanks for your reply @emmathedilemma! That sounds awful for you. I’ve realised my main side effect has always been bleeding - I went on the Pill at 17 and came off at 21 as I always ended up with irregular bleeding which causes so much worry. I didn’t have anything again until last year at 35 (after being continuously breastfeeding/pregnant for 6 years) when my periods suddenly became heavy, and the coil was suggested by my GP as ‘it might stop them completely!’

Sadly no such luck!

I've been taking Norethisterone alongside the Mirena coil for years. The coil reduced my really heavy painful periods, fainting, vomiting each month and I just feel so chilled on it rather than being a witch for several days each month. Downside was I bled lightly almost continuously for about 8 months before taking Norethisterone. I now have a 'normal' period every month but I'm not one of the lucky ones that never bleed having the Mirena.
