Mirena due out, what to expect?

Hi all,

My Mirena coil is due to come out next month. Bar the first three months of spotting I've been very happy on it, but I don't think I'll have another one. This was was inserted under general anaesthetic (don't ask), and I'm hugely anxious about having a coil put in under normal circumstances.

What should I expect in terms of pain when it's taken out? I've read it's not too bad...

And also, anything I should expect in the days/weeks/months afterwards?

Any insight much appreciated.

@Rockbird - this was at my scheduled smear test at my GP's. The nurse noticed that I had a coil whilst 'down there' and I admitted that it had been in place for longer than the recommended time. She offered to remove it there and then.

Inserting the coil was awful. I tolerated it but then nearly passed out afterwards.

Removing it was easy, didn't feel a thing.

My second one though, the coil strings couldn't be found so removal was painful and a TV ultrasound to find it was fine, but inconvenient! I didn't bother with another one.

After the speculum was in I was told to cough and im sure it had the right outcome with the coil coming out, but i felt alot of pressure against the speculum when i coughed.

Is it normal

Whoops posted too soon - is it normal to start spotting as the mirena wears off? It's 4 years next month and started bleeding a bit today! Not had anything for years!

Sorry I can't help you goldpendant, I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along... I've come along to say that I must be numb from the waist down as I resently had a smear and my coil removed and another one put in and I didn't feel a thing... I did take a paracetamol about an hour before my appointment so that obviously have helped.

I started to have some spotting after about 4 years, and was having periods again by 5 years. Still much lighter than before, though.

I’ve had painful smears, and was concerned that I’d be in agony with this. Didn’t feel a thing!!
