UTI

About 3 weeks ago, I got a urine infection. It didn't hurt when I went, it was just at the very end when I was feeling like this almost spasm-like pain, as well as needing to pee A LOT. I was also having some light bleeding.

I took some cystitis sachets and when I finished them, I started to feel better. I finished taking the sachets at the lunchtime (cos I'd started the dose in the middle of the night). I felt a lot better, so I had a glass of coke in the evening and then it just came back so much worse, to the point where I was up all night, feeling like I was constantly bursting for the loo.

I couldn't leave the house to go to the doctors it was so bad, so I had a telephone appointment and after giving my symptoms, she prescribed me with a 3-day course of nitrofurantoin. This seemed to do the trick and I felt a lot better, but I just haven't felt right since, like I still feel a bit irritated down there. It's hard to describe, and it's not all the time, but I'm still feeling some slight burning sensation at the end of peeing.

I've never suffered from a UTI like this before and I'm pretty certain it was using a menstrual cup that caused it. My friend is a regular sufferer from UTIs and she said that it's just probably not cleared properly because I'm not drinking enough water.

I've ordered myself some test strips so I can test my urine myself, but I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar?

Contact your GP again and tell them your symptoms haven't cleared up fully. They may ask for a sample to be sent off to the lab to find the exact strain. It could be that the antibiotics they gave you were the wrong ones for the particular infection you had.

Back to GP for you. I suffered terribly.

Thanks, I'll give them a call on Monday.

A lot of people are resistant to that antibiotic. You need another one, or maybe a longer course of the first one. If its really getting you down I'd ring 111 for a script. I think Lloyds pharmacy do them online too. Just be careful it doesn't escalate over the weekend.

Actually is it Superdrug??

Question - how did you clean the menstrual cup? I found if I used sterilising fluid it caused irritation but if I boil it I’m fine. Definitely need to mention to your GP, you may need more antibiotics just to knock it on the head.

Yes, more antibiotics needed, or at least a test to check for remaining infection.

I tried to self treat a UTI in the summer for way too long. Big mistake and I needed 2 courses in the end to clear it.

I'm still in fear of it coming back as it was so painful and I recognise the pain at the end and your "spasm" description.

I took a urine sample to the doctors today and they've said there are traces of blood in it, so it's being sent off so that I can get the right course of antibiotics. I'm not really peeing much more often, but I just don't feel right down there I guess. It's just a bit of a burning sensation now. So for now, I'm just trying to drink plenty of water.

Oh and I was just cleaning the cup with water, probably should have been cleaning in boiled water, but I just feel like this menstrual cup wasn't right for me because I could feel it putting pressure on my bladder and when I'd go to the loo with it in, I couldn't go properly. But maybe it's just the washing in water that caused it. Either way, I think my experience with a menstrual cup is enough to put me off ever using one again.
