What can I take for awful period pain?

53, on HRT gel and ovestin tablets.
Day 3 of period.
Yesterday was heavy and painful
I have tranexamic acid to ease heaviness. Not sure it helps
Usually one day on pain and I'm ok. I took Ibuprofen and used a hot water bottle
Today I feel nauseous with the pain, ibuprofen hasnt helped.

I read that paracetamol isn't much use for pain, although I'm tempted to try.

Can somebody help please?

Am I missing something? Anything over the counter?

When my periods were getting really horrible my GP prescribed me codeine. It did make me very sleepy but I took it at night for the worst two nights and it helped me get a painless, good night's sleep, then in the day I would use take paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Also what I weirdly found quite helpful was a tens machine. My husband has one for back pain, and I read online it could help with period pain, so I gave it a go and I have to admit it was helpful! Feels a bit weird as it's like a gentle tingly electric feeling but it did offer some relief.

Naproxen, ideally started before pain starts.

I can't use it anymore so take co-codamol instead which is not as good but it's good enough to enable me to function.
