Mirena - no strings- what next ?

I’ve been referred for a scan, but just wondered what might happen next ?
If it’s in a good position do they leave it, or will they want to fish it out ?

My strings disappeared almost immediately, scan showed it was still in the right place so they left it alone. Been in 6 years now so I need to arrange to get it changed. Same happened with my last one, both GP and consultant had a brief go at getting it out but when that failed I was booked in to have it out and new one put in under general anaesthetic.

General anaesthetic ?
It can stay where it is then !
The only problem is that I’m bleeding.

There's always a chance it has fallen out ? Maybe down the toilet
I fit Copper Mirena and Jaydess and quote 1 in 20 can fall out to ladies
Best to have US then X-ray to be sure

If the scan shows it is in the right place then it can be left until it is due to expire and can be relied upon for contraception. The only complication comes when it is time for it to be removed. This can sometimes be achieved just using a thread retriever, but if that fails then you could need to go to hospital and get it taken out under ultrasound guidance/ via hysteroscopy.

While you are waiting for the scan though it would be worthwhile using another form of contraception such as condoms, on the off chance that the coil has actually fallen out, or is incorrectly positioned.
