GP said my cervix looked abnormal

I just had a smear test done- it was a private GP as I get health insurance through work and he said that it looked a bit “unusual”. He was careful to say he couldn’t see a mass or anything like that. What he observed was that it was yellowish instead of pink and there were visible blood vessels.

I’ve got a gynae referral to double check- he did say it was an abundance of caution and not to lose sleep but of course I am now worrying myself crazy. I’m thinking that as he is not a nurse he probably sees fewer cervixes than a nurse who does the smear test clinic day in day out, and he did say it could just be a version of normal that he hasn’t seen before. I’m 48 and perimenopausal. I’ll get the smear result pretty soon I guess. It’s my birthday tomorrow, happy birthday to me.

Has anybody had anything similar?

You ate absolutely right, he probably hasn't seen as many as your regular practice nurse.

I had a smear done by a new practice nurse some years ago that set off a similar chain of events.

She really struggled as my cervix lies to one side. The smear then came back with abnormal cells and I was asked to attend I think a colposcopy, where I was told my cervix was very healthy and they wouldn't take a sample of the tissue as it could create problems.

Try not to worry, easier said than done I know Thanks

Thank you! I’ve managed to put it to the back if my mind, especially after reading about how slowly cervical cancer develops- my smears are all up to date and the last one was fine. Will see the gynae consultant next week.
