Mirena and fibroids

Evening all. Having a Mirena fitted on Monday due to heavy periods and fibroids. What are your experiences on how quick it may help reduce blood flow ( if any?) TIA

It definitely made my periods much lighter but very irregular - took about a year to settle but I’ve been completely period free since.

Thanks @supercatlady

I hate to tell you this but it didn't! In fact, it made the bleeding heavier, longer, and I had cramps like I've never had in my life (had days off work sick as a result). Mine bled itself out eventually in spectacular fashion.

@emmathedilemma this is what I am so praying doesn't happen to me

I can't exactly remember now as it's about ten years since I had my first one, it did take a few months to settle but since then there's been nothing, maybe one day a year of spotting. One of the best things I ever did.

papaoscar1208 · 05/07/2021 13:50

@EverythingDelegated seems like no one appears to have the same experience. From one extreme to the next Confused

I had spotting on and off for a few months then nothing for 6 months... till I got the vaccine 😂

iamalighthouse · 05/07/2021 13:54

I had a mirena for extremley heavy, very clotty periods due to fibroid. it made a big difference immediately. However I was still getting large clots, and sadly they managed to pull the coil out twice after a few months . This was not painful btw! I was so disappointed because overall it really had made a difference. I hope it works for you!

MareMare · 05/07/2021 13:56

I had one fitted in February, and while it's absolutely stopped the insanely heavy bleeding, flooding through clothes etc and stopped it virtually immediately I still need to wear a pad or liner the majority of the time, even if it's mostly just light, watery discharge which occasionally changes for a day or two to something more recognisable as an actual (very light) period.

longtompot · 05/07/2021 14:05

Sadly it didn't help me. I still bled, still was heavy with clots and eventually after a month or so my body rejected it at 5am.
Are they able to do anything about your fibroids?

MrsSlocombesPussy · 05/07/2021 15:40

Changed my life. Went from massive clots and changing pads every 20 minutes to just a bit of spotting every now and again

Topseyt · 05/07/2021 15:58

Didn't work for me. It was in for over a year and never settled. I bled for much of that time, the bleeding got heavier and the fibroids grew rather than shrank. I also had permanent PMT while it was in and was very glad to get rid of it finally. The only reason I kept it for so long was difficulty getting an appointment for it's removal during the Covid restrictions.

I wished I had never consented to it.

I suppose you only find out if you try, but my experience was not positive and I won't be allowing them to put another in (yes, it has already been mooted).

torquewench · 05/07/2021 16:00

Worked fine for me. I had my first one fitted 5 years ago and have just had it replaced. No periods at all, which was a massive relief after a huge fibroid (which I'd had removed) and v heavy periods.

papaoscar1208 · 05/07/2021 16:12

Thanks ladies. Having a hysteroscopy in an hour with the coil fitting. Fingers crossed I'll be one of the lucky ones

I never had heavy periods , but l did used to suffer bad stomach cramps, as soon as l got mirena fitted my periods stopped all together. I am on my third one now and not had a period in 15 years which is bliss. It really suits me, no side effects, some cramping just after having it fitted but settled down after a few days. However my sister had one but it didn't work for her, so she had.it removed.

Moonface123 · 05/07/2021 16:16

Also meant to say l am 52 and not having any menopausal symptoms either.

Milomonster · 12/07/2021 23:02

My fibroid bleeding was absolutely intolerable - I couldn’t leave the house and pure liquid blood with huge clots. I had fibroids removed and then mirena inserted. I have a bit period cramping and hardly any bleeding. How large is your fibroid?
