What brought your libido back to life?

It turns out that no one has really studied women's sexual desire, particularly in reference to hormonal contraception.

What studies there are seem to be very small samples, only a few months after starting hormonal contraception and in much younger women. And all incidental to other main investigations.

So please help me out with a bit of crowd-sourced knowledge:

Did your libido die a death, and then did it come back?! And if so, what did you do to recover it?

Context is: post children, over 40, low stress, good sleep, no caffeine & alcohol, exercise, happy with own body, good (& very patient) husband, Mirena coil due for replacement soon.

I'd be happy with half the randiness I had in my 20s. Did a change in contraception help? Is there a medication that will help? Is there something hormonal that I should investigate?

I've never been on any kind of hormonal contraception, we've always used condoms exclusively which is unusual I know but I love being free of the burden of contraception, never had a reason to try anything else. Been with OH 15 years, never had any drop/change in my libido, it's pretty consistently high. I read about the side effects women frequently put up with and am shocked to be honest.

I'm 41 and probably less healthy than you. Fairly stressful, drink probably a bit much wine and often don't sleep well. None of this affects my libido though however the mini pill killed it dead. It's definitely back again now I've stopped taking it, especially mid cycle. Sadly the reason I stopped taking it is because I split up with partner so don't have anyone to utilise it with

Read the book come as you are by Emily Nagoski. Just brilliant and really helps understand the mechanisms of sexual desire so you can work with rather than against them.

Fanfic. Whatever genre floats your boat. Find your self love first!

Thanks, this is a good suggestion.

I am 50, peri menopause kicking in, in on HRT now

But for me (I'm in a new relationship 2.5yrs) is have sex, the more sex i have the more turned on I am and the more sex I want

MakkaPakkas · 19/06/2021 11:34

Not quite an answer to your question, but the mini pill absolutely killed my sex drive stone dead along with giving me a few MH issues

NamechangerSince2010 · 19/06/2021 13:23

If I've got this right, the the mini pill is progestogen only, the same as the Mirena. Although theoretically the Mirena is lower in dose and allegedly more locally acting (though how they stop the progestogen being transported literally everywhere in the blood is baffling and possibly untrue).

DH is willing to have the snip ✂️ but I'd imagine that'll take a while to be organised...

I’m 30 and mine is dead in the water. I do have a 16 month old so I blame it on that, but honestly I’m not really sure why.

I had bloods done recently and all normal.

Glad to read it can make a return...
