No periods and high LH

Hi everyone,

I’m 18 and my LH hormone has been high for the past 2 and a half years. Have been referred to gynaecology and endocrinology twice and both won’t do any tests to see what could be happening. I was told by my gynaecologist in 2019 that she wouldn’t do anything until I come off birth control so I did and after I got my last period on birth control in December 2019 I haven’t had another one and still no one will do anymore than blood tests. I had an appointment last Tuesday with my gynaecologist and he told me that they won’t do any test until I want to have children and gave me norethisterone Which I have to take 3 tablets daily for 11 days 4 times a year and have referred me to the sexual health clinic for the pain I have during sex. Has anyone else had a similar experience and know where I could go from here.

Sounds like it could be PCOS, which is often characterised by raised LH and the absence of periods. Has your GP mentioned this to you as a possibility?

They gave me an ultrasound when I was 15 but it came back clear but I think that was before my lh raised I can’t really remember because they didn’t tell me it had raised until my nurse told me months later and they won’t do another one.

This also sounds like PCOS to me as well, high LH levels are often seen with this condition.

Have a look at the Verity website on PCOS and educate yourself further about PCOS.

I would go back to the GP and insist that you are referred to another hospital gynae unit.

Pain during sex should be flagged up as well for further investigation as that can be caused by endometriosis. I would keep a daily pain and symptom diary particularly if you do not already do this.

You will need to be persistent in order to get answers, do not let the fact you are 18 allow the medical professionals to fob you off here as you have been. I do not understand why northisterone has been prescribed either.

@AttilaTheMeerkat I agree there is obviously something not right for me to not have had a period in that long. I’m going to try change practice as my doctors don’t have the time of day for me anymore. I have been asking for a laparoscopy for a year and there just not budging.

@AttilaTheMeerkat with the pain during sex I also have vaginal tearing no matter what I do and they keep telling me they can’t do anything about that either.
