Hair loss 2 years post birth

Hi.
I’m going to book an appointment with my go, but thought I’d come on to ask if anyone has been in a similar situation

My hair started falling out around 4 months after my daughter was born. Seemed pretty bad. After a while settled down and regrow the started

Over the last few weeks I’ve noticed my hair is so thin. Really thin. I always had thick hair. Even when I straighten it which I don’t do often I’ve noticed that it’s not even sitting right when I’ve styled it. It really looks awful. No bald patches just thin.
Any time I shower I notice hair in the plug hole and also when I brush my hair.

I only wash it 2 times a week and I don’t always blow dry it or straighten it.
I’m very concerned. My confidence has really hit a low blow.

Is it possible it’s still related to having a baby?
Thanks in advance

I had a lot of hair loss at about 4 months pp and then another bunch went around 6 weeks after I stopped breastfeeding (at 2 yrs).

If you haven't recently stopped bf then a gp appt sounds very sensible. I understand that hair loss can be linked to thyroid issues so good to rule that kind of thing out.

Thinning hair is an effect of an underactive thyroid, as is missing the outer part of eyebrows.

Lolalovesroses · 03/06/2021 16:43

Have you recently had Covid? It's one of the after effects. I know somebody who lost over 50% of her hair after Covid. 1 year later it's starting to return.

Letsbekindplease · 03/06/2021 22:31

No, never had Covid as far as I am aware

Yeah I’m wondering if it could be thyroid issue. I’ve got a dr app booked to see if they can get to the bottom of it.

Just noticed my eyebrows and eyelashes look sparse now too. So worried

I had exactly the same thing, it was awful as although it sounds shallow my hair was my “identity”. Something else happened (crippling joint pain) which resulted in an auto immune disease diagnosis (not saying this will be the case with you), even years after starting the meds I didn’t see an improvement. If I were you I’d definitely go to your gp just to rule anything like that out. What I have done which has made an amazing difference (almost back to before) was taking a daily biotin supplement (obviously if your gp says ok), I have to take folic acid also because of my meds but also found the hair regrowth mask from Lee Stafford to really thicken my hair up (I’ve tried so many products before), it took about a month to six weeks to see an improvement but it’s been amazing. My eyebrows and lashes are a work in progress. Try not to panic, it’s probably something they can help with.

Thanks for your reply. That sounds awful. And I totally get the hair identity thing. Have to wait 2 weeks for an appointment which is annoying!

Ok my bloods are literally just in and they’ve came back fine. No concerns. No farther forward why my hair is thinning. Hmm I wish I could pin point what it is!

Do you have the actual blood results and the ranges? Post them on healthunlocked.com. I'm hazarding a guess that you do have an under active thyroid but not enough for the gp to act.

Have you got any other symptoms?

Letsbekindplease · 24/06/2021 08:23

I don’t have the results just someone on the phone told me that all my results were absolutely fine and nothing to worry about.

Ps yes just sore knees. I’m always tired as I’ve got a toddler who doesn’t always sleep. Think that’s it.

Call your surgery again and ask for a printout of the actual results - you’re legally entitled to this. As a pp says, often with things like thyroid issues the ‘it’s fine’ number actually isn’t at all!

(I have an underactive thyroid.)

Letsbekindplease · 24/06/2021 11:06

Ok thank you I’ll do this.
Thanks x

So I eventually got my results back and my ferritin levels are 10.
Hair is still shit and thin. And thinning.
They told me it’s a 7year change of hair and this happens ? I have never heard of that before and it seems like a cop out.
My hair is so thin that again, it won’t even sit straight. I feel so sad and down. It’s just hair, I know, but it’s unbelievable how much it can make you feel upset.
Not sure what to do now??
I’m using niroxin and can’t see a difference to be honest. Considering getting g my hair bobbed so it doesn’t look as obvious but I have a chubby face and I don’t think it will be a good look lol.
Any advice ? X

So although your ferritin is 'normal' .. 10 is too low for your hair to grow .. it needs to be higher around 20+

Also as others have said..your Thyroid sounds under active..

Someone more experienced will hopefully be along soon 🌸

it's not 'just' hair.. it affects your appearance your confidence everything 🌸

MrsNettle · 27/07/2021 10:30

Are the thyroid levels normal too?
I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid over a year ago. Three - four years prior to the diagnosis my hair started thinning, then joint and muscle pains started and eventually spotting and cramps that lasted for most of the cycle. This eventually prompted me to go see my GP. I wouldn't focus too much on hair alone. It's most likely a symptom of some underlying condition.
Good luck x
