Coils

I’ve been using a copper coil for years. Prior to having my children and again having had all my children. I’m now 43 years and I’ve noticed my periods have got heavier, not sure if it’s because I’ve had four children or an age thing. I’m considering having the coil changed to a marina coil but a little concerned about weight gain and also in the unlikely event of falling pregnant, not knowing etc. Any thoughts, experiences, tips and knowledge would be gratefully received. Thank you in advance ladies x

Hi,I have had several Mirena’s but I’ve never had a copper one to compare.

I have no periods with it all (not the same for everyone).
I have lost weight/gained weight on and off but I don’t think it’s related to the coil.

No side effects for me but of course everyone is different. The fact that I will never ever have another period is life changing for me as they have always been debilitating.

I had mirena for the first time late 30s. I bled every single day for about 6 months. Was on the verge of asking them to remove it when it stopped - and never started again. I haven’t had a bleed now for about 2 yrs.
Didn’t gain weight but did notice a change in control of emotions, which took a while to identify as probably related to the coil but now I realise the connection I’m able to control it better.

I have developed malasma on my face which gp said is almost certainly caused by the hormones from the coil.

On balance I will get it again when this one needs replacing.

Heavier bleeding is a common side effect of the copper coil. That said, the mirena made my heavy bleeding heavier and I had more days of bleeding and spotting than I didn't. Never again!

I have only had the mirena coil and never a copper one. I've heard and read that the copper coils can be the cause of heavier bleeding so as my problem was heavy bleeding caused by fibroids in the first place a copper coil wouldn't have been suitable.

The mirena seems very 50/50 really. It works well for some women but not at all for others. Unfortunately I fell into the latter category. I didn't like the mirena and it didn't like me either. I had it in for 13 months and bled a lot for much of that time. My already heavy bleeding got heavier and far from shrinking the fibroids as I was assured it would do, they grew and there are now more of them. Shock

I was personally very relieved to get rid of my mirena and will never have another. I also found doctors surprisingly reluctant to remove it when I had decided enough was enough and it wasn't working. The reply was always "give it more time", apparently indefinitely. Eventually, I had to find my backbone and be much more assertive/insistent.

I suppose there is only one way to find out whether or not it will work for you as we are all different. This is just my personal experience and it wasn't good. Some women swear by the mirena though and have it for years. Others swear at it.
