Periods and cervical examinations.

I was referred to gynaecology last week as an urgent referral due to likely ectropian cervix but obviously needing to rule out anything more sinister.

My appointment is tomorrow and as the Law of Sod would have it, my period came last night. And I have really heavy, clotty periods.

I don’t know what to do about tomorrow.

I have tried ringing my GP and the gynaecology department to talk to someone about whether the examination can even be done with such a heavy period taking place but I can’t get hold of anyone.

My appointment is at 08.30am so it’s not like I can try again tomorrow in terms of finding out whether the appointment needs to be rebooked.

Has anyone else been in this situation??

I had a colposcopy during my period once but it wasn't heavy. I did call and tell them, and they said to come anyway.
Since it's an early appointment you are unlikely to be able to cancel now, and it was booked as urgent, I'd go on the off chance that they'll see you anyway.

My period happened at the same time as a gyne appt to check out a polyp inside my uterus. I spoke to a nurse when I checked in at the clinic and she said it wasn't a problem and the appt went ahead.

Theyre used to dealing with pregnant ladies bleeding so I dont think it would stop them investigating at all. Best of luck!

I am waiting for an 'urgent' scan at the moment and have been told that it will go ahead if I am bleeding (handy, as I have been bleeding non stop for the last 3 weeks...) I just have to remove a tampon if I a wearing one

Good luck with your appointment.
