Has anyone else lost a lot of hair after having a baby and/or getting a coil fitted?

Help! I can't work out whether this is normal postpartum hair loss or whether it's caused by the coil. I had DC2 6 months ago. I got a Kyleena coil (hormonal coil, lower dose than Mirena) fitted 2 months ago. Since then I've been losing a lot of hair. I don't remember losing this much after DC1. (But my memory's terrible at the best of times and two young DC haven't helped!)

I was wondering if anyone might have had similar experiences and could advise? Many thanks in advance!

I lost lots after both pregnancies and now have a weird double terraced fringe where they are both growing out. Hair everywhere, constantly unblocking the shower drain. I dobt know how much but my ponytail is noticably thinner so maybe 20% or a bit more. Thinning at rhe hair line too.

I had the opposite. My hair got super thick whilst i was on the coil but i always have weird reactions to BC - usually it just makes me incessantly happy for the first few weeks on it

I didn't lose any hair after DC1 but lost lots after DC2 - my pillow was shocking every morning! It passed after a month or so.

After DC1 I lost a lot of hair and two weird half moon shaped gaps on either side of my parting. Was ridiculous. But all grew back fine. The overall hair loss was, I assume, because while pregnant my hair grew so much but the little gaps were just a fun side effect of giving birth. My hairdresser assured me it was normal and would grow back. It did. my hairdresser also enjoyed teasing me about the baby fluff while it grew back. She is a sadist

Thanks all. I'm really torn about getting the coil removed. I have a gut feeling that's made it worse but if I'm wrong and it's just the postpartum effect, I'll be stuck for contraception for no good reason Sad

I lost lots of hair after ds1 - my teeth and nails also went to shit! It didn’t happen after my others but I think it also had a lot to do with not having a great diet at the time of having ds1. Try to eat lots of veg (especially leafy green veg),protein, eggs etc, pulses if you can - you need to replace the vitamins and minerals that pregnancy takes away from you and strength comes from the inside out. Look into taking a good multi-vitamin too.

Thanks, i am taking a breastfeeding multivitamin and eating as good a diet as I can manage (DC2 has food allergies so I've cut out several things, hence taking the vitamins).

After DC1 I went on the mini pill and didn't lose any hair. After DC2 I didn't go back onto birth control and loads of my hair fell out. It started a few months after the birth and lasted about 6 months. I didn't get bald patches or anything it was just lots of shedding. It did all grow back though.

I lost loads of hair post birth, it was coming out in handfuls! My hairdresser said it was completely normal, and she gets so many women coming in after having a baby worrying about it - she said she wished midwives mentioned it more, but I think they probably have enough to do!
I also have the mirena coil which was fitted about 18months later, so long enough that the original hair loss had settled down, and I don’t recall it causing any further issues?

Thanks all. I've booked a phone appt with the GP as I need to discuss a prescription, I will mention the hair loss too and see what the GP thinks... I wonder if they would agree to do bloods to check hormone, iron and vitamin levels... probably not but I might ask!

I have a much needed hair appointment in 5 weeks (not that I'm counting down the days or anything Grin) so I'll see what my hairdresser says as well.

If it is the coil, I'm not sure I want to wait that long to remove it, but perhaps it's unlikely, especially as Kyleena is a lower dose than Mirena.
