Hysteroscopy

Has anyone had one? I've been recommended to have one for a lost coil - careless or what!! X

Had several. a couple of paracetamol beforehand and it was fine. Not a good way to celebrate your birthday, but fine to drive back to work.

I’ve had a few, one under local anaesthetic and two under general.

I’ll be honest, I found the one under local painful, hence the others were done under general anaesthetic.

I was supposed to have one to remove a polyp but couldn’t go through so was referred to do under general anaesthetic, it’s fine.
I actually was surprised not to cope, as I managed ok a lot of medical procedures in my 20s 30 for infertility but probably I’ve became more sensitive with age...

I'm the Op from the thread @emmathedilemma linked above. My experience was really unpleasant, however yours doesn't need to be.

You need to be aware that you can ask them to stop at any time, and you are not weak or pathetic if you do so. It sounds so silly, but I think part of my bad experience came from inexperience/lack of knowledge/believing there was something wrong with me. If it hurts, then it bloody hurts, and you can tell them to stop.

There is a chance that it won't. I've read a lot about it since my failed procedure last week, and found there is a whole range of experiences, from terrible, like mine, to quite positive.

I still feel it is quite an invasive procedure to have without GA, however I know how important these investigations are. Just please don't feel bad if you have to tell them to stop. I didn't, just let them keep going until I was in agony, thinking my pain must somehow be my fault.

Had mine today. Let's just say, if I ever have to have another one then it's under a GA! Otherwise, no way!!! In fact, I have to have a polyp removed and the pain.. omg! I'm booked in for a general to have that removed. Painkillers were a complete waste of time.

You need to read Caroline Criado Perez and how GA is routinely offered to men for similar procedures but women are supposed to cope with a couple of paracetamol.

Im so scared & confused. Im on HRT (Evorel Conti) and had irregular bleeding & some spotting 3 months in. My GP suggested a abdominal and vaginal scan, both were fine but they noticed a large fibroid which they didn’t seem overly concerned with (fine by me) the GP suggested that I keep an appointment I was already given before the scan with GYN at the hospital (just for advice) but the consultant has suggested a Hysteroscopy!!!! I don’t understand why ???? my scan was fine…what was even the point of the scan! Im seriously considering cancelling as I really don’t see the point and Im super scared 😟

Maybe they need to get a clearer picture of what's there or take a biopsy. I've had ultrasounds but have had a couple of follow up hysteroscopies too. They diagnosed polyps and fibroids. I'd go for the hysteroscopy but tell them you want a GA if you don't want to go through it without anaesthetic. I was only ever offered GA - didn't know you could have it without it but I certainly wouldn't have had them without.

I had one recently and although unpleasant it was bareable with some paracetamol and a local anaesthetic. I did feel a bit sorry for myself for a few hours afterwards but was fine the next day. Mine was for a "lost" coil too.

I've had four hysteroscopies and biopsies for bleeding.

I usually take paracetamol and ibuprofen beforehand and manage without anything else, except, once or twice, some local anaesthetic to the cervix.

It's not a fun business but it's reasonably quick and I've found it bearable and would prefer not to have a GA. The consultants I've had have been very caring and the nurses are lovely too. I've always known they would stop if I asked them to.

Everyone's experience varies, of course.

Thank you so much for the info, my hysteroscopy is scheduled for Friday and I’ll ask if I can have a GA but I don’t think they will agree as they have already said take 2 paracetamol (for me they don’t even help with a headache let alone an invasive procedure!) ….tbh I don’t think they would put an animal through this but its ok for women….makes me sad and angry

I hadn't a great experience with a hysterscopy a month ago. I added the consultant to stop and he was so impatient.

The two nurses were lovely but didn't make upnfor his lack of manners. I can't go into it all now but I lodged a complaint.

I jadnit done two weeks later under GA and recovered really well. I was sleepy for a while afterwards due to the GA but the pain was bearable. I only needed pain relief after it and then it was like a dull ache.

I don't understand why they don't just offer it under GA, for me I felt violated the first time but listened to the second time.

I had one under GA for cervical erosion. The gynaecologist I had was really good and recommended GA.

Mine was for a list coil.

It was ok - painful and undignified but I think it's better if you have previously given birth (I hadn't)

Strongest painkillers you can get over the counter are propranolol.
