PMS and insomnia

This is making my life hell. When I don’t have a decent sleep my anxiety and depression go through the roof.
This only started when my periods started back after having my baby.
Does anyone else experience insomnia before their period? I know I should speak to a GP about this but is there anything else I can do? What helps?

We're just moving this over to women's health for the OP. Flowers

Yes me. I take magnesium and b6, definitely helps.

There's a book that has helped me called the women's guide to overcoming insomnia
Biggest thing for me is getting out of bed for a while and reading instead of tossing and turning. Also no screens right before bed and no caffeine after lunchtime.

I’m struggling so much with this.

I know all about sleep hygiene until it comes out of my ears. But if it’s hormonal then none of it helps unfortunately. Not for me anyway. I also get itchy skin all night. It’s like torture. Insomnia, anxiety and itching!

I feel like I need cold, hard drugs. I wonder if there’s anything a doctor could prescribe for a few days a month. Or anything to balance hormones.

I’m on the verge of speaking to my GP but not sure they would help.

Hi did you find anything that helped? Not the same but similar. I stopped cerazette pill at the beginning of December and all was well until I had my first period at the end of jan. now Iv got insomnia, fatigue, very very high anxiety and depression, pms the list goes on. I'm hoping to have the coil refitted but the dr can't see me until the 30th of April. Don't know if I'll last that long! Lol

I know it’s been quite a while from your message, but if you’re still feeling the same, it might worth talking to your GP. I had the same symptoms, itchy skin, sleepless nights and it turned out I was anemic.

Nicola8787 · 03/03/2024 05:43

Did anything help with this? Had awful insomnia when weaning my baby and now I have sleepless nights when ovulating and before period. It’s been going on for a year and I have no idea where to turn now

IlFaitBeau · 10/05/2024 10:25

Reviving this thread as not too old. Crippling sleep-maintenance insomnia for 5 awful nights before period. No issues falling asleep - tend to fall asleep on sofa at 9 pm if I could - but I am in bed and soundly asleep at 10. The problem is waking up at 2 am and..... thats it.

Only during the 5 days before period.

I take melatonin tablets each of those nights but I may have developed a resistance to it as it does not stop till period arrives.

Please can anyone help?

Am 39 FYI, with two small kids 8 and 4, between them, the dog and DH's slightest shuffle - or nothing at all - I am awake 5 nights in a row from 2 am every month.

it's awful.

@IlFaitBeau sorry I know this is an old thread, did you find any answers? The same for me and it's ruining my life!

Ooh interesting that this popped up - I commented 4 years ago.

Honestly- the only thing that sorted my sleep was HRT. But appreciate some
may be too young for that on here. Perimenopause can start 5-10 years before menopause so if average age of menopause is 51 - then back that up…

I only wish I’d started it earlier I waited until I was practically through the menopause. Finally I sleep well. I didn’t sleep for about 7 years!!!

Nicola8787 · 07/11/2025 12:16

I tried HRT at 36 ( paid privately) which didn’t help. Went on sertraline and the mini pill which sorted it

Delatron · 07/11/2025 13:32

Yeah from what I understand it’s progesterone that drops before your period and that is what causes the insomnia. So anything that helps stabilise that will help. I slept perfectly fine on the pill.

The mini- pill is progesterone only so will be good for sleep if appropriate as will the Mirena coil. So these are good options if HRT isn’t suitable or you’re too young for it.

I’m guessing sertraline is also very calming and helpful for sleep.

HRT will be much lower dose than the contraceptive pill hence why it might not work for some. It also takes a lot of tweaking.

KylieKangaroo · 07/11/2025 14:26

Thanks both I think I will give the mini pill a try, I am 40 so probably peri but not ready to try HRT yet
