Lower right pain

Hi guys,

Looking for some advice, I’ve had a mild pain for the past 6 months, I can pretty much pinpoint it to being my right ovary. Throughout the month I can feel it as a sort of tug when I lay down on my side. When I ovulate and when I’m on my period the tug becomes an ache which radiates into my groin/top of leg.

I’ve had blood tests for infection, an internal exam and recently an ultrasound looking at kidneys and ovaries which all came back normal.

Has anyone had anything like this? Just wondering if there’s any suggestions of things I can speak to my doctor about.

Thanks, Carla

I have almost exactly the same but on the left side. Going for ultrasound scan this week...

MariaC03 · 17/01/2021 17:43

Oh really, how long have you had it for?

On and off for the last few months and then prior to that at the beginning of the year. I think I had the same thing several years ago too which was investigated but nothing was found.

Earlier in the year, I had a weird period which was much longer than normal and the pain started then. It’s sort of just in below where my hip bone curves round, sort of diagonally across and about an inch down from my navel. Although the pain coincided with an unusual period initially, subsequently it hadn’t really correlated with my cycle I don think. It’s hard to know. It’s like a gnawing, burning pain sometimes, other times a bit like a dragging sort of feeling which can be exacerbated by movement. I’ve also had it radiate into my back and down into my buttock/ thigh. The only thing I’ve come up with is that it may be stress related as it seems to occur when I’m anxious.

I had blood tests around the end of November and they were clear. Got scan on Tuesday but not necessarily expecting much to show up.

Mine also started with a long period which lasted around 2 and a half weeks. I had actually had a positive pregnancy test on the day my period was due, but then my period came that same night, so I assumed it was some form of very early miscarriage/chemical. Once the period had finished the pain started and was constant for a while. It then died down and I started tracking it when it flared up, that’s when I’ve noticed that now it only really kicks in for a day or 2 around ovulation and my period. The rest of the time it’s just a pull here and there.
I suffer from bouts of anxiety also, so friends and family keep suggesting ibs, but the fact it can be pin pointed makes me think surely not? I would prefer if this was the cause though!

Good luck with the scan, hopefully you will get some answers from it, or peace of mind. I have a doctors appointment this week so I’ll be sure to update you if he has any further suggestions.

Hi @MariaC03

I’ve been for my ultrasound scan and nothing was found. I’m frustrated as I’m still getting the pain. I’m on another thread at the moment discussing the possibility of adhesions, which don’t show on ultrasounds, though not sure if that’s what’s causing my problem. I’ve had to emergency c sections but the pain is not in the area of my scar, so I’m thinking this is unlikely. Hope your GP appointment is useful and you can get some answers.

Hi @whatsthatnow74

Sorry I didn’t reply sooner, I completely forgot.

I’ve also found the process very frustrating. At this rate it could be a full year before I get any real answer to what is causing this pain. The doctors are doing the best they can but it’s the wait times that let them down.

My doctor confirmed all the tests I’ve had and the ultrasound look normal so he’s referred me to a gynaecologist. He had no idea what the waiting times are like at the moment, it took 3 months for an ultrasound so I suspect a gynaecologist appointment will be longer.

Have you any idea what your next move will be?

Hi,
I had what you described and after numerous tests which came back clear my gynecological doctor suggested my right sided pain was referred pain from my back. I had physio and all was ok. If I lie on right side sometimes the pain from my hip goes to my groin.

Hi everyone, obv this is an old thread but if @MariaC03 and @whatsthatnow74 are still around I’d love to know how you got on? I’ve got pain on the left side and am worried about ovarian adhesions after an inconclusive ultrasound (as part of a very complicated MMC…). Thanks!

MariaC03 · 27/07/2023 17:52

@Oxalis00 I eventually saw a gynaecologist and after all the tests they were pretty certain it was ovulation pain. Although some form of sensation was constant for many many months, ovulation time was when it flared up the most.
At the time we had been TTC and had a couple miscarriages so I assume my body just became sensitive.
Sorry to hear about your MMC, I had one shortly after this which turned out to be a partial molar, hope you’re healing well, it can take a lot of time but you get there ❤️

Thanks so much @MariaC03 - really appreciate your response, and your sympathies. Ovulation pain is less worrying than all the other possibilities! It does seem MC affect the body in all kinds of ways, for much longer than I’d ever have realised before my own. How are things for you now? I’m sorry for your own losses. Molar was queried on mine and it was a scary prospect. Hope you’re the other side of it all now.
