PCOS cycle length change

Hi

I am 31 and since coming off the implant around 23/24 I’ve always had quite long cycles/irregular periods.

I started getting bad acne around 25 and went to the doctors who did hormone bloods, the letter stated tests showed higher levels of testosterone and i MAY have PCOS and reffered for a scan, scan was all clear and the nurse said everything looked healthy and she could see on the scan i had just ovulated.

I have suffered terribly with adult acne on and off since I was 25, it’s thankfully under control at the moment. However in 2019 it flared up again so I went back to the doctors who spoke again about PCOS and reffed me for day 3 and day 21 bloods,
These came back all clear. I do have a hairy chin, and I have always struggled with my weight but I don’t always eat the best and drink to much wine But can lose weight when I diet.

I have been tracking my cycles since 2017 and they range from 32-42 days long, normal 4 day Period not light or heavy. I had the occasional 53 day cycle thrown in twice since 2017 but that’s the longest it’s ever been.

I have been pregnant twice so assume I am ovulating.

However I took the morning after pill on October 25th, had a bleed 7 days after that so early nov and nothing since I am now on day 62 of my cycle and my app states my period is 24 days late. This has never happened to me unless pregnant. I have taken around 9 pregnancy tests all of which are negative.

I’m not sure what is going on!! Worried my period
Will never come back ? Not sure If it’s the pill that has thrown my cycle completely off !

Hi I’ve got the same issue. My periods are anywhere from 30 days to 62 but I’m currently on day 68 longest I’ve ever been. I’m not pregnant and the doctors said my overies on the scan looked completely normal. So I’m stuck with the question why do I not bleed regularly. It’s hard when I’m trying to convince I’m 30 years old. I hope I’m not heading for a early menopause. :(

What were the results of your day 3 and day 21 bloods?. You should have received actual numbers rather than those coming back "all clear".
It appears that something fundamental has been missed here and PCOS cannot be ruled out. Having adult onset acne can be linked to PCOS as well.

Sorry posting under a different user name but I am the OP.

My period did eventually come after 71 days.. I ended up paying for a private scan for peace of mind. Everything was fine and the scan showed I had ovulated. I put this very long cycle down to the MAP as my cycle after that was 36 days which is normal for me.

I’ve started tracking my ovulation not to TTC but as I wanted a better understanding of my cycle and I came on my period 13 days after a positive ovulation test last month.

@Sian1837 have the docs confirmed you are ovulating ? I’ve had two internal scans and ovulation was spotted on both of them but you won’t always see that I guess depends what point in your cycle the scan is

I do think I have mild PCOS but I am ovulating which I guess is the main thing

Shocked202 · 15/03/2021 17:13

Just to add I don’t have any children even though i have been pregnant, I’m 31 @Sian1837 and I’m worried the long cycles will effect my as well when TTC

I had a internal scan to check for PCOS but they said it was completely normal... Back in July I had the worse bleeding and pain. Went to the doctors they believe I had a miscarriage. But my periods are so hit and miss it’s hard to know. Right now I’m 56 days since my last period. I plan to start have kids next year with my husband. However I’m worried with not have any pattern to my periods. My blood work when they tested it was normal too! Confused

They've likely missed something fundamentally wrong here. It is also possible to have periods without actually ovulating.

The cystic follicles associated with PCOS do disappear, only to be replaced by further cystic follicles so you need more than one internal ultrasound scan. It can also take a skilled sonographer to spot it.

Never accept "normal" without any detailed explanation. What blood work was tested and on which cycle days?. Blood tests done on the wrong days can give misleading results. Re blood tests you should have had a day 2 test done to check and compare your LH level against that of FSH. With PCOS there is usually a far higher level of LH compared to FSH. Blood tests can and should be done according to calendar days (ie the 2nd and 21st of each month) if the cycle is irregular.
