Recall after routine mammogram

Has anyone got any words of wisdom? I had a mammogram a couple of weeks ago and got a letter yesterday for more tests. Nothing discernable to me in my breasts, although obviously now since the letter one is definitely throbbing, ha!

I’m worried sick, any words of wisdom gratefully accepted!!

This happened to me earlier this year

It was back got a more detailed mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy

The issue got me was a cluster of micro calcifications. Larger calcifications and micro ones which are spread out randomly, are normal. It’s the clustering which they needed to check - can be normal, can be a very early sign of precancerous changed

Now perhaps that’s not relevant to you at all - my centre gave a contact number for a breast cancer nurse who was happy to tell me what was going on (I asked because I worry less when I know what I’m up against - that might not be the right approach for you)

You might have to be in the mammogram machine to guide the biopsy (unless they can see what they need to get at by ultrasound). You should get plenty of local anaesthetic.

It took about a week to get results. Mine were inconclusive so I needed a second biopsy. Second results more of less clear - no cancerous or pre-cancerous cells, but some aplasia of unknown significance, so I’m on annual recall for 5 years

Some people who have been recalled, they said. don’t even require a biopsy as the detailed mammogram shows no cause for concern. Lots of people get an all clear after first biopsy.

I’d say you don’t need to be at panic stations, but go be kind to yourself, because even though it is hugely more likely to be something inocuous it can still be a pretty stressful time.

Yes it happened to me just this week.

First I went and had another mammogram with a better 3D machine, the radiographer explained it was my left breast that was the one they were concerned about, then I was called through to the consultant and another doctor and I had ultrasound on the left breast. In my case they decided they were benign cysts and no further action required, just back in 3 years for the routine mammogram.

I sympathise, I was quite fortunate that I got home on Monday night to the letter summoning me at 1040 the following day and I know how worried I was, so I hope you have a good outcome too Thanks

Ladies thank you so much. I haven’t been able to get a handle on my stress over this at all. Peak 2020 really. These two stories have really helped. I’m going to phone the nurse next week when they are open again.

Really appreciate you taking the time to reply.

I had this in February I reacted exactly the same. Full panic mode!! Mine was a routine mammogram and I too never had any issues with lumps etc. I had some calcifications in my right breast. They took a biopsy then a week later I was recalled again! I was beside myself. They just needed a bigger sample! It turned out to be benign calcifications. It was the waiting that was the worst. You are in my thoughts. I won't say don't worry, people were saying that to me but I still did!! But please try and get some perspective......... if you've not found any lumps it's more likely to be something simple like calcifications. ThanksThanks

Also I have three titanium markers in my breast now 😂😂😂 titanium tits!!

Wellwhatalovelyday · 30/12/2020 19:59

@Shoegal0305 thankyou so so much. I had a call this morning to say that they had a cancellation and I could go in tomorrow morning. Titanium tits is a GREAT nickname. I hope you use it regularly!!

@Shoegal0305 did they give you any indication the first time around whether they thought it was benign or not?

@Wellwhatalovelyday no they were very 'closed book' which heightened my anxieties. And everything was a weeks wait! Week till recall, week till appointment, week till results, week till 2nd appointment! However they didn't appear overly concerned if that makes sense?

Please let us know how you get on? I remember going with a friend and she literally had to drag me in as my legs turned to jelly. 😂

Wellwhatalovelyday · 30/12/2020 20:56

@Shoegal0305 thanks for your quick reply! Yeah I was all bold and said I was going to go on my own... my friend said NO WAY. I decided she was probably right... but unfort with flipping COVID I can’t take anyone. Anyway. Let’s see what tomorrow brings.

Please keep us posted. The chances are much more likely it's all fine. X

Wellwhatalovelyday · 31/12/2020 12:19

I too am now known Titanium Tits! Got a 1 cm lesion on my left boob. Two weeks wait for results but the radiologist said that if it’s cancer, it should just be a day op for removal, not a mastectomy or anything. Thanks for your replies last night and thanks for telling me about the titanium, I had no idea that was even a thing!!

Oh I do hope it all works out well for you. All the best Flowers

Shoegal0305 · 01/01/2021 12:07

@Wellwhatalovelyday that's positive news. That's why we go for mammograms to catch things early so like you say even worse case scenario it'll be removed easily. X

Wellwhatalovelyday · 01/01/2021 12:43

Thanks ladies. Just got to keep everything crossed for the next couple of weeks. 2021 is going to bring better news for us all, right?
