Has anyone has this? Does your whole body go in the tube or just your lower half?

Not all of you goes in...my head was just slight out.I could see into the room. are you worried?

SuddenArborealStop · 02/12/2020 13:17

I didn't have a pelvic one but did have one when I was pregnant for the baby and it was up to about above boob level.
I'm very claustrophobic (very) and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Get comfy before they start, I needed some supports and they made sure I was warm as I was there about an hour.

doadeer · 02/12/2020 13:18

I've had two. One private and one NHS. My whole body was in. Happy to answer any questions!

theresagiantonthebeach · 02/12/2020 13:20

I found it oddly relaxing. ,it gets quite warm and there are lots of loud noises. ,you will have a button to press to call the radiologist. ....don't wear anything with metal in.

CrystalMaisie · 02/12/2020 13:52

Lower half, head and shoulder still out. I found it relaxing too. I had a sort of weighted blanket on, if it had been a bit quieter I would have fallen asleep.

doadeer · 02/12/2020 13:55

It's strange how some people are fully in and others not! I've always had pelvis and lumbar spine, maybe that's why I'm fully in?

hopeishere · 02/12/2020 14:39

I'm not too worried but was curious. Did they tell you what they found then and there or did you wait?

Ex MRI here. In most cases you won’t get the result straight away as there are many images for the radiologist to study before they can do the report.

theresagiantonthebeach · 02/12/2020 14:46

mine was pelvic ..In up to nose

doadeer · 02/12/2020 14:47

I requested the disc when I was NHS and it was given when I was private. That included a very short report but it was discussed in greater detail a few days later when I had follow up.

MrsFezziwig · 02/12/2020 14:47

Basically the area being studied needs to be in the centre of the scanner. So if it was your head, that would be in the centre of the scanner and your lower legs would be poking out (you would go in head first). If it was your knee, you would go in feet first and your head would be outside. For just pelvis, probably head first and your feet will poke out. Let me know if you’ve got any particular worries and I’ll address them (also been in the scanner myself many a time!)

ginandtonic324 · 02/12/2020 17:05

I had one earlier this year. Whole body except the head went into the tube. No pain or discomfort at all but extremely noisy. And very boring!!

ginandtonic324 · 02/12/2020 17:08

If you go private, they will give you the results straight away. With the NHS, they might take a lot longer. They took nearly a month to phone me about my CT scan results. But we are under special circumstances at the moment so it is understandable.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 02/12/2020 17:13

I had one a couple of weeks ago. I had an injection of buscopan to stop any bowel twitches, you’re face down (or I was) and I had some sort of camera on my back. It was pretty quick (20mins) and I think the top of my head was out (went in feet first).

Martinisarebetterdirty · 02/12/2020 17:13

Oh and still no results - not sure who they’ve gone to Grin

Namechange600 · 02/12/2020 19:14

I had one on pelvis and found it very claustrophobic my eyes could just about see out. Really had to try hard to stay calm but that is me, others found it ok upthread. Had a canula in for dye to run in part way through and found it uncomfortable. Turned out I had severe endometriosis and adenomyosis and was in a lot of pain at the time so that would be why then.

firesong · 02/12/2020 19:17

It's weird, I was booked in for a knee one and was told my whole body and head would be in. I'm claustrophobic so I used my BUPA and had a seated scan instead. Still made me claustrophobic, as it's the stuck feeling I hate. But better, I'm sure!

hopeishere · 02/12/2020 19:32

Thanks everyone. There's no mention of dye on the paperwork so don't think that will happen.

Still made me claustrophobic, as it's the stuck feeling I hate.

Sadly, it’s difficult to get away from the “stuck” feeling as the area under examination has to be perfectly still so the images aren’t blurred, so often has to be immobilised using a frame of some type which is also used to collect the data which produces the images.

MrsFezziwig · 02/12/2020 22:57

If you go private, they will give you the results straight away.

If the reporting radiologist is present when you have the scan, that is possible, but is not always the case - it depends on how different departments work. It is however true that you are likely to be contacted with the results faster - that’s one of the things you’re paying for.

emmathedilemma · 03/12/2020 16:27

I went in feet first and my head was just sticking out. I've had head & neck ones in the past and it was nothing like as bad as those!

hopeishere · 21/12/2020 23:19

Just to update... they wouldn't do it as there is theoretically a chance I could be pregnant Hmm I'm 99.9999999999999% certain I'm not but they refused to take the risk. I've to wait until I get my period and then call to rearrange!!

I had a pelvic MRI last week. Went in head first and had whole body and head inside the tube.

hopeishere · 11/01/2021 19:52

Well we managed to get it done today. I was almost totally in at the start and then I was moved in a bit more a few times. It was quite claustrophobic but I kept my eyes closed.

It was very noisy even with the headphones. It took a lot longer than I expected. I also had a contrast dye and buscopan - getting the line in took ages!

doadeer · 11/01/2021 19:58

Well done on getting it finished!
