Genetic testing for breast cancer

Hello.
Due to breast cancer being prevalent within my maternal family, I have decided to take a genetic test in the new year (I am 40).
I have been recommended to a clinic in London, and after checking my history, they have agreed to go ahead after some counselling sessions.
I'm really looking for other people's experiences, recommendation for clinic ( happy to change clinic, I'm happy with the one I have spoken to but I haven't been recommended to them).
And has anyone that has tested positive gone on to have surgery. Its such a big decision and in all honesty, I don't know much about the op, reconstruction, recovery etc and don't want to go into this with me eyes closed.
Thank you!

Watching with interest as in the same position, although not brave enough.

No experience myself but I have a friend that decided to get tested for brca1 and unfortunately it is positive. She is based outside of UK but is awaiting double mastectomy and her ovaries/fallipion tubes removing. She is having councilling but says the thought of the ops is easier than not knowing if got cancer constantly. She said anxiety over the unknown is worse. Everyone is different and think no one can answer for you. Good luck!

Just bringing this up again. I have decided to go ahead with this. Does anyone have an experience?

My main died of breast cancer at a young age and a couple of cousins have had it. All below 40 years old. On my father's side is mum does of it and his sister has recovered several times from it.

So from the age of 20 I have been convinced I had the gene, when there was an opportunity to get tested I've turned it down time after time.

I'm now in my 50's and decided to finally get tested for it. The test included three genetic variants in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, and it came back negative!!!

After all those years of worry!

Wish I'd done it before!

Good luck.

Laeta, so sorry to hear about your mum, but great news that you are negative.

I'm pleased I finally am getting around to doing it.
