Can anyone share any tips on how to calm down before your first smear test? Or what to expect that you might not think of beforehand?

I find them so un-memorable that I can’t think of anything. Which hopefully might be some comfort in itself.

Try to breathe out with soft face . GP told me soft face equals soft pelvic floor, makes the whole process easier . Diaphragmatic breathing too - tummy out with a breath in; in with a breath out .

Also - fists under bum cheeks can help if cervix is hiding .

Explain to GP it's the first time and that your nervous. I usually ask for the smaller speculum as feels more comfy. It's not painful and is over in a matter of seconds.

I was soo nervous before my first and when it was done I just thought to myself ‘wow all that worry over that’

I know it’s not really helpful when people tell you not to worry, but try not to fret, it’s over in a matter of minutes.

My advice would be to wear something ‘floaty’ like a long top or a dress so you don’t feel so naked when you take your bottoms off. They cover you over anyway but it helped me.

Wiggle your toes. Always find this helps, I don’t know why.
