First smear - abnormal cells?!

Had my first smear test.

Had a letter to say I need to go back for another appointment to do a more in-depth check. But not received my results to tell me what's wrong!!

I'm upset and don't know what to think about this. Feel at a loss and I hate being an over thinker

Can anyone advise

Was it possibly inconclusive ? I'd ring and demand to speak to someone as like you I'd worry myself sick overthinking it

As far as I know they have changed the way they test, they used to check for abnormal cells in everyone, but now they only test for HPV. If they find HPV they then invite you back for further investigation. After my first smear last month they sent me a letter afterwards saying I am HPV negative so I don't require further testing. Just because you have HPV it doesn't mean something is wrong, just there's more chance of developing abnormal cells.
Chances are everything will be fine, try not to worry! But I would definitely give them a ring to check and put your mind at ease

I think it's because they only test for the HPV virus now so if you were positive for that you would need more tests. Doesnt mean that there is anything wrong though just that they would now need to test for abnormal cells. I would call your GP though and just check this. Its disgusting they haven't given you the full information.

It was a million years ago - but from memory it was ‘abnormal cells’. It was nothing - I suspect they didn’t do the test properly.

I had abnormal cells after smear several years ago. I needed to go and have treatment to remove them, they numbed the area and from what I gathered they lasered them off. It took around 30 minutes, was told to take the rest of the day off work and rest. Then I had yearly smears for 5 years after.

They just redid my smear then it came back Ok.

Honestly opened the letter to you need to go to the hospital and no reasoning. Rang up and they rambled on now and finally told me

So just finally got through to the doctors. Explained my concern asked me multiple questions and told me I had abnormal cells with HPV. Bit all over the place as I'm shocked but he said I'm low risk and it's not cancer. Anyone else had this result?

Yes I have - it's really nothing, they remove the abnormal cells in a procedure that takes about 10 mins and you're on your way. Really don't worry. I freaked out loads about mine but it's so common and abnormal cells doesn't even mean cancerous just that they might have the potential to become cancerous at some point. I recommend looking at the forums on jo's cervical cancer trust website - or phoning their helpline - they make it all so much clearer
