Can I test for under active thyroid at home?

When my dd was born I was piling on weight. I told my doctor I just could not shift the weight whereas before I'd never had issues and also generally been underweight.
Something changed when I had dd. I'm still 7 years later struggling with my weight.
I realised I can tick every symptom of thyroid problem and think maybe it's this. I run a few times a week, have been recording my calories everyday and can't lose weight unless I'm eating very few calories. I am overweight and yet can barely manage to lose a pound in a week. This cannot be right.
As I've said, previous to dd I was usually in the underweight category. I don't know what's happened.

Does anyone know if I can get my thyroid tested privately my doctors are being really shoddy at the moment I can't deal with their Fort Knox approach to seeing them.
