Periods - lots of clots? TMI & trigger for miscarriage

Probably TMI but I don't know what this could be and although my GP has referred me for an ultrasound it's likely to be a long wait due to Covid, so I will be describing period blood etc. Apologies for grossness.

I had a miscarriage last year, ended up having medical management to help it along. I had a negative test afterwards, so I don't think it could be retained tissue as they said that would cause a positive test? My next period was very heavy with one incident of flooding through my clothes, but I'd been warned it might be heavier so wasn't too concerned.

Ever since then, I've had lots of clots when having my period. I've always had some clotting, but now it's more clots than bleeding - I'd usually change a pad or tampon every couple of hours pre-miscarriage on the first couple of days, now the pads aren't becoming saturated as I'm not passing as much liquid blood, it's mostly clots. I pass most of the clots sitting on the loo and bearing down slightly - mostly around £2 coin sized on the first two days, although some bigger and some long and stringy. I dare not use tampons as the clots wouldn't be absorbed.

I spoke to my GP pre-lockdown about this and being really tired, I was told that it can take a while for periods to go back to normal, and diagnosed after a blood test with vitamin D deficiency (treated with high dose vit D, no other concerns from the blood tests).
I've since had a phone consult and been referred for an ultrasound but obviously might be waiting quite a while.

We also tried to conceive for the last seven months with no joy - have had to pause now as I'm changing jobs - but not sure if whatever is causing the weird periods is also affecting my fertility.

Has anyone had this, or any ideas what it could be?

Thank you.
