PCOS- is Metformin ok to take with Gilbert’s syndrome?

Just that really, just had diagnosis of PCOS (I’m 35 and have had crazy periods since becoming a mother at the age of 28) gestational diabetes with my second pregnancy excess hair etc etc. No problems conceiving luckily but I suspect I’ve always had this condition but the symptoms have only really shown themselves since having kids because that has coincided with my BMI going up to 28, would have been in the healthy range pre kids. Anyway, after years of feeling awful I’m pleased to have a diagnosis and upon doing research i think taking Metformin could really help me, however I am a bit concerned about something I read about you shouldn’t take it if you have liver problems, I have something called Gilbert’s syndrome, it doesn’t cause me any problems it’s just something that came up randomly in one of my many rounds of blood tests that I’ve had in the last few years. I’m interested as to whether anyone takes Metformin for PCOS and how it has made the feel in terms of weight, energy levels, general health etc, and also if there is anyone who has PCOS or diabetes that also has Gilbert’s syndrome and takes Metformin? Can’t find much about it online. Thanks 😊

I have no idea what Gilbert' syndrome is but I have taken Metformin for a long time but don't take it currently. I too started having symptoms after my pregnancy. Lost all the pregnancy gained weight in the first six months post delivery only to gain back double once the period started. Had hyperpigmentation, skin tags, excess facial hair, skin cuts as few other issues. The doctor put me on Metformin and mini pills (6 months) and what a relief that was. I was 82 kg when I started and dropped to 75 in first 3 months , my final weight was 68 after a year. But it wasn't all good news, Metformin is really bad on your digestive system. I had horrible diarrhea and tummy pain for the first month, kind of like having norovirus. It did settle eventually. It also gave me wind throughout the time I took and it also made me b12 deficient. I am not saying don't take Metformin , just don't rely on it as your only answer. Start with Metformin because you need the push. Then when things start settling and becoming better then stop it. Don't take it for long.
I take magnesium, works the same as Metformin, keeps my period regular, helps with weight management and control insulin resistance. The only thing it does not help is with facial hair.

Thank you for replying, I was thinking about taking it while trying to get the weight off.

Yes I’ve got a phone appointment tomorrow, I just want to be informed before hand and can’t find anything online. I often find the gp doesn’t always know the answer!
