Anyone had an urgent referral for Ovarian cyst?

I went to the doctor with a weird abdominal pain on 27th June. The nurse practitioner thought it might be a fibroid and referred me for blood tests and ultrasound. I had the ultrasound on Tuesday and spoke to the doctor about the results on Wednesday.

She said that there is a small fibroid but they can also see what they think is a cyst on my right ovary (the pain was on the left) and thinks that a gynaecology referral is a good idea and, as a routine part of that referral, she wanted me to have a blood test for Ovarian tumours (which I did today).

Although the ultrasound appointment came through much quicker than I was expecting, the thing that's got me worried is that today I got a letter from my surgery saying that an urgent referral has been requested and someone from the hospital will call me to make an appointment.

I thought they'd just refer me and I'd get an appointment through in due course so the tone of the letter has spooked me a bit compared to the casual discussion I had with the doctor. Has anyone else this for cysts?

Hi @BeBraveAndBeKind

Hope you have now had tests & results that are good. I went through urgent referral which was rather worrying to begin with buts scans, MRI showed I had nothing sinister.

It can be hard to interpret scans so often if there is a possibility something is serious they will do urgent referrals to get the full picture.

My sister was urgently referred as she had what looked like massive ovarian cysts and the consultant wanted to remove and biopsy them. They turned out to be caused by endometriosis wrapped round her ovaries and tubes, it was all removed and she had no sign of cancer and no further symptoms.

Good luck and I hope they see you asap, but it is a good thing they are investigating quickly and hopefully it won't be long before your appointment

Thanks for your response @CoffeeBeansGalore (great name btw!). Yes, I had an appointment with the Gynaecologist who confirmed that there's a fibroid and a large cyst but not cancer thankfully. They've recommended either an ovary removal or hysterectomy (which will be required eventually anyway) so just waiting for a follow up appointment for that now.
