I had a low grade fever since yesterday . And the left side of the left breast has a tender lump that hurts if pressed.
Is this just a blocked milk duct ? Should I have to visit the gynaec , or heating pad is enough ?

Sounds like a blocked duct, but be wary of mastitis. Feed as much as possible to try and clear it

Are you also cold and shivery, feel like absolute crap, and the lump is red as well as sore? As pp said, mastitis.

Rest, rest, rest, and take ibuprofen, and feed like a demon. Express as well if the baby is sleeping; try massaging the lump too; run your boob under a power shower, dip it into a hot bath and express, feed with the baby in different positions.

If it's just a blocked duct, it should go away with a bit of pummelling/feeding/shower after a couple of days; if it's mastitis it can pass with all the advice above but you may need antibiotics – do not mess around with mastitis, it's a bastard!

(Aware all this advice conflicts with "rest".)

I agree, if you feel rubbish get antibiotics ASAP.

Look at dangle feeding time to try and clear the blockage. Looks weird but works!

I had this, nipped it in the bud before it developed into mastitis. I did a few things. Hot shower and massage the lump and then I pumped whilst massaging the lump with my electric toothbrush. Also fed baby whilst she lay down and I hovered above her so boob was sort of hanging down.

If you can get hold of it (amazon or health food shop) try to get hold of some Lecithin. It's a supplement and makes your milk less sticky.

Sounds like a blocked duct, I got a few and it's best to get them sorted before they turn to mastitis. Feed on that side, google dangle feeding. Hot shower blasted on the lump (as hot as you can tolerate) and electric toothbrush on the lump will help... also if you have a pump try dangle pumping Grinthe relief when it clears is worth the effort!

OP here. yes I feeling chillish yesterday , measured temperature last midnight, it was 104 ! but i didn't feel like it , maybe it was wrong
but I am feeling better today, and lump feels better somewhat as I had massaged it. Now going for warm baths or warm pads.

@sarahhoping has your blocked duct clear? I'm interested to know as I'm going through something like that at the moment. Thanks

sarahhoping · 24/07/2020 05:52

@Bigbear123 hi yes it did clear completely in a couple of days .
but for that I had used a hot compress.
Maybe if you have a heating pad or water vat you can fill with hot water and keep it pressed against that part where the lump is . I think it helps lump melt away.
also try to make your baby feed from that side frequently. In a few days you will be fine :)

@sarahhoping thanks so much for your reply. I'll keep going with the massaging and prioritising feeding on that boob first as well as warm compress and cabbage leaves in between. It's been 2 weeks and I'm a little worried. Gonna push to see doctor on Monday for further investigation if it doesn't go away by then. Thanks x
