Mirena Coil - pain after 3 years

Hi Ladies,

I’ve had my 2nd Mirena fitted for around 3 years now and just recently I’ve started experiencing horrendous cramps and a sharp pain in my pelvis. I spoke to my doctor and they did an emergency ultrasound to rule out ectopic pg and rupture (which was all fine) but I’m still spending days where standing up is so uncomfortable. I feel like I’m going mad! Never had a problem with my coil before, so I don’t know why after 3 years I’m experiencing discomfort/pain. Has anyone else had a similar issue with the mirena?

I’m also super broody at the moment so I don’t know if this is all linked. Sorry ladies, I’m so fed up. I can’t decide if it would be better to just have it out. Luckily this has led to DP and I talking about trying for our first, but I wasn’t wanting to start until early next year (I’m nervous about getting pg while this virus is still so prevalent).

@Dinks18 hello 👋
I’ve had my coil 5 years and it’s over due out by 8 months. I’m having pain like excruciating cramps in the top of my vagina, very low stomach/pelvic area, also very low back pain it’s also worse when I do more activity ie, walking.
I’m not sure myself but maybe your hormone is running out? Maybe have it checked again? Have you been tested for a urine infection? Coils can also be a cause of bacterial vaginosis and although sometimes you won’t get pain, it can cause pain if not noticed quick enough.
I’m calling my GP tomorrow to have it out.
Also don’t be worried about visiting a GP at this time. You will have a phone conversation first, and if they need to see you they will let you know :).
Do you have the same symptoms as me?

@MrsG, that does sound really similar to the pain I’ve been getting. I’m really prone to water infections, and I have no other symptoms for that so I’m fairly sure that’s all fine. I was meant to hear back from the doctor after the scan but apart from a text to say that the scan was clear, I’ve not heard anything. I think I will have to ring them back again this week. My recent doctors visit for the scan was really good, they were really careful and I just had to have my temp taken. It was good to see how vigilant they are being. I really hope you’re able to have yours out soon.

Was just about to post a similar issue with my coil that has been in for 3.5 years.

Started getting quite nasty cramps over the last few months although very light periods. My previous 2 coils were in for 3 years before I started getting problems so it seems I have a 3 year threshold with them!

Glad to hear the GP taking it seriously as I'm really concerned about going at the moment.

My pain was constant for a couple of weeks, then it went for a week or too, now it’s back.
All lower back ache, achy pains top of my legs and groin/pelvic pain again 😫

How are you all doing now? I have been experiencing lower abdominal cramps, pressure and bloating for 2 weeks.
