Irregular Periods

Obviously I know only a doctor will be able to help me however some similar voices or similar stories would be very welcome...!

Essentially I have irregular periods and it's really getting me down. I have no idea when my next one will be, sometimes super light and sometimes reeeally heavy and painful.

Currently on my period, tailed off to almost nothing last weekend, now seems to be full flow and heavy with bloating. Sometimes for a day, sometimes it lasts weeks. There are no rules!

I've attached a screenshot of my last periods. Is this super out of the ordinary? Frustrating as I feel like everyone else just knows and is in tune with their body.

You need to see the GP to start with and you may get referred to a gynaecologist. Such types of problems are really outside a GPs general remit.

Irregular periods are often caused by hormonal imbalances, in this respect a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a possibility, another possible cause are problems with the thyroid gland.

In the meantime I would keep a daily pain and symptom diary and note everything down on that. How heavy and painful are your periods too, this is not something you should be putting up with either. Endometriosis can cause both heaviness and pain to arise.

Hi thanks for getting back to me!

I will have to put it to the top of my priority list post COVID! I've read up on endo and I don't think I have it as the pain is not unbearable and normally only lasts a day or two

I have also researched PCOS but don't have any of the other symptoms... trying to steal clear of the googling as lots of it points to infertility :(

Do put it to the top of your post to do COVID list. You're more likely to be subfertile than infertile so please do not jump into thinking you are infertile.

I have always had problems with periods in terms of irregularity and also pain, in my case the irregularity of periods was caused by PCOS and the ongoing pain was due to endometriosis.

Keep monitoring the pain level of your periods, am glad to read it is not unbearable but if the nature of the pain changes do mention it to the GP.

Do not use Google either!. You need a diagnosis first and foremost and the GP should be your first port of call.

You will need to be persistent in order to get answers.

I have very irregular periods too, my cycles have varied from 30 days to 69 days just in the past year. I have PCOS, GP did a blood test which showed markers for it, I don't have any other symptoms and an ultrasound showed no cysts on my ovaries either. It's worth going to the GP when you can.
