Breast has a hot red sore patch on it

I woke up yesterday with a hot red sore patch on my breast towards my nipple on my areola area. I'm so scared. I shouldn't have googled it. What more likely conditions could cause this aside from Cancer. Chances are it's benign right? I'm 42 and probably entering perimenopause (some vague symptoms). I'm also on long term antibiotics for a bladder condition (embedded infection) so I'm kind of surprised to be having an infection elsewhere as I assumed the antibiotics would kill any other infection before it started.

I'm going to see the doc tomorrow but any reassurance would be great. I'm so distracted and worried and having to look after 3 young kids, I just pray this doesn't stretch out into weeks of waiting for results etc. I do have BUPA cover so could go private if I do need a referral. Sad

I should elaborate- there's also a small hard lump under the hot red bit. Similar to when I had mastitis when I was breastfeeding years ago

Are you breastfeeding now?

It sounds like mine when I had an abscess on my breast, but that was after I had mastitis. Hopefully you'll be able to see your GP tomorrow for reassurance

Almost certainly benign, but you should get it checked out with your GP tomorrow. I had something similar a few years ago, and had two very anxious weeks waiting to be seen at the breast clinic, but thankfully all fine. Random cyst, in my case. Do get checked though!

You can get mastitis at any time, it doesn't have to be when you are feeding.

The redness, pain and lump all sound like some sort of infection.

Will you make a GP appointment in the morning?

Hi,
Was there definitely nothing there before? It seems a bit odd, could it possibly be an allergy to something, have you had any metal, e.g on your bra or come into contact with any plants, insect bite, a new cream, new wash powder? Is there any kind of lump? I know it's easy to say but it is probably something really simple and not scary at all. I had a scare a few years ago- it was nothing, but certainly freaked me out! If you've got an appointment, great, hopefully they'll be able to reassure you. Most of the time these things are absolutely treatable, but it is important you get some advice from people who know better and, yes, if you've got BUPA and the doctor feels it needs investigating get it done asap that way you know what you are dealing - its what I did and it saved me an anxious wait. Try to stay calm and good luck!Smile

I very much doubt it's cancer. It doesn't sound like it at all if it's just popped up from nowhere. Go to the GP. It sounds like an abcess or infection of some sort.
