Hpv but no abnormal cells

Afternoon everyone

Just need a bit of advice.
Had an abnormal CIN2 last year and had the LLETZ to have it removed. Just had my test of cure smear and it's come back HPV positive but no abnormal cells and have got to go for a colposcopy. I'm not sure what this involves if I have no abnormal cells just hoping someone can give me some advice. Don't want them to find something that's not on the smear.
Thankyou xx

If you have a colposcopy and they find no abnormal cells they will simply make you got for a smear every 12 months.

I've just had 4 years of yearly tests and the hpv's finally bloody cleared

charlou89 · 24/02/2020 16:18

@Treacletoots thankyou so much for the quick response. So glad yours have cleared up. They were saying to me on the phone I may need a biopsy taken. Was urs just HPV xx

Yes. No abnormal cells just hpv. They took a biopsy at mine, but it really wasnt a big deal. (although it felt like it at the time)

Try not to worry, you'll be fine, and it's reassuring you're being taken care of.

@Treacletoots what the first one they took I biopsy. I thought they could see abnormal cells through the microscope xx

I think you're right. At mine he said almost straight away there weren't any issues, so sounds like you may be correct.

OP I hope you dont mind me asking for advice on your post but it's got me thinking. I had a smear a couple of years ago and was HPV positive and had a biopsy that was clear but not heard from them since. Should I have had a smear yearly?

charlou89 · 24/02/2020 17:43

@HakunaMatataa hey I'm not 100% I haven't been to my appointment yet as it's tomorrow. But from what I've been hearing from everyone they go on yearly smears if you have HPV xx

@HakunaMatataa I was thinking the exact same! 3 years ago I was told I had abnormal cells, had a biopsy which they then said was clear but I was HPV positive with a 'high risk' strain of the virus. I wasn't told I need yearly smears. I'm going to phone the doctors tomorrow and book and appointment since I should be due anyway.

My last smear in oct was clear but 'trace' of hpv present. To go again in oct. The one prior which was way before i got pg was borderline with hpv and between one thing and another i never got round to being seen again til oct. No mention of colposcopy after oct one just to go back in a year for a smear.

louderthan1 · 24/02/2020 18:57

I had a smear in November which came back with no abnormal cells but HPV positive. I've got to have another smear in November this year to check that a: still no abnormal cells and b: that the HPV has cleared.

charlou89 · 24/02/2020 19:03

@louderthan1 oh ok this is my test of cure after LLETZ last year. But it's showing no abnormal cells so because I've got Hpv I've gotta to go back for a colposcopy which I'm worried about xx

@Treacletoots hey just a quick question I went for my colposcopy and have been discharged due to there not being any abnormal cells but I have been put on 3 yearly smears not 1 year smears. Is this right xx

@charlou89 well, I'm not a doctor.. But when I went it was part of a new trial. Say 7 years ago now when they were referring all hpv detected for a colposcopy.

It's possible they've refined the process. I had a following 4 more with hpv detected but not abnormal cells which they just kept me on 1 yearly until it cleared. I suspect hpv is the major cause of a lot of abnormal cells hence why they check for that first, then check if there actually are any abnormal cells.

It can vary between areas as to policy but if you're concerned at all you should just ask.
