Positive experiences of the mirena coil

Givemestrengthorgin · 17/02/2020 17:24

Thinking about getting the mirena coil for contraception and in the hope it will reduce the severity of my periods which are currently horrific due to the copper coil. Looking online I see lots of negative reviews of the mirena and I'm apprehensive about it as I've had hormonal cystic acne in the past and I've read the mirena can inflame that.
Does anyone want to share their positive experiences of the mirena?

I'm on my third and I love it. No periods at all. No side effects. The first one took an age to settle in (about six weeks) but no issue with subsequent ones. Got pregnant with eight weeks when I wanted to and had one taken out.
If it suits you is a great thing.

I’m currently with mirena coil.

It took a bit of settling and it seems as though I’m still getting periods. Hm. But so far it’s all ok.

I’ve had one for over 20 years and it’s been great. I had a bit of spotting for a couple of weeks initially. I’ve had one period in that time, and that was when I had one removed to ttc, which I did within what felt like 10 minutes.
I had it replaced about 8 weeks post-natal, and have had a couple of replacements since then. I’m now possibly menopausal-I can’t tell as I’ve not had periods on mirena, I’m only going by being almost 50 and blood tests 2 years ago showed me as peri-menopausal.

Had mine in for 5 years now. Spotting for a couple of months and no periods since. As I had it fitted to help with extremely heavy periods it changed my life! I'll be getting another fitted when this one's removed.

Thanks everyone, that's reassuring to here. I think I'll give it a go and just hope it doesn't have a negative impact on my skin.

Changed my life as got rid of horrendous heavy periods. On my second one now and due for a change soon. Until recently still felt as tho I had a cycle but without the horrific bleeding.

Chewbecca · 17/02/2020 21:18

I had my first last year at 46. Took a while to stop the spotting & I wanted to give up but eventually it did stop & I am now v v happy. Having virtually no periods is liberating. My spots are better than ever too.

ExpletiveDelighted · 17/02/2020 21:18

I'm on my second, no periods, no side effects and it got rid of horrible hormonal acne spots that I used to get along my jawline every month.

Shylo · 17/02/2020 21:20

I’ve always suffered with cystic acne and the mirena didn’t make it any worse, if anything it’s improved in the past two years (so years 4 and 5 of the mirena)

Lexilooo · 17/02/2020 21:20

I had one for over 10 years, would recommend it. Completely stopped my periods and didn't really know it was there. Insertion was a bit uncomfortable but manageable then had spotting for a few months then nothing for 10 glorious years!!! Removal was an absolute breeze. Periods came back virtually straight away with no issues.

I put some weight on but that coukd well have been down to too much cheese and wine rather than the coil. My libido was affected a bit inasmuch as I didn't get the super horny days around ovulation but that's the same as the pill.

Much better than Depo or the pill in my opinion as the dose is low. Lasts ages and is really reliable. If I decide to go back on contraception I will have another Mirena.

Fizzlestix · 17/02/2020 21:23

I’m 4 years in
Terrible acne before
Still some spots but it hasn’t gotten worse, maybe better but that’s maybe due to me being older
Periods are light but regular which is a nice change for me

I get a bit more cramp now and I thought it was agony the first few days after it was fitted

But not pregnant! And don’t have to worry about birth control so I’m happy overall!
No worse than the implant for me
And better than the pill

KTD27 · 17/02/2020 21:23

Wish I’d got one years ago. I had two days of spotting once it was inserted. Next period ‘normal’ in so far as right time and normal bleeding.
After that has been maybe a day of the lightest spotting every two months ish. It’s amazing. No period pain, no heavy bleeding, no awful hormonal acne. Love it

PoisoningPigeons · 17/02/2020 21:24

I’m on my second, will be getting my third this year. I’ve had no periods the whole time, bar the occasional spotting. Haven’t noticed any other changes that could be obviously attributed to the Mirena.

ShakespearesSisters · 17/02/2020 21:25

I had my second one fitted last year. My first was fitted 3 months after I had my second child (6 years ago) I had about a month (maybe 2, I can't remember) of heavy periods and cramps I haven't had a period since. It didn't make me put weight on, slimming world helped me lose 2stone while I've had it (and chocolate has helped me put that back on). I haven't had any mood swings as far as I'm aware. My husband may say differently.
I like it.

okiedokieme · 17/02/2020 21:35

So far it's ok - had break through bleeding for 2 weeks but now trouble free. I assume it's working Confused

Rockbird · 17/02/2020 21:39

Just come to the end of my first one and about to get a new one put in. Been no problem at all. Periods took a few months to disappear but no sign of them since. Back now because it's expired and I forgot what a pain in the arse they are.

ShanghaiDiva · 17/02/2020 21:42

No periods, no side effects, bit uncomfortable to have it inserted (and not very dignified !) but not painful.

Questioncms · 17/02/2020 22:34

Mine brilliant. I had one about 8 years ago and it was awful - not sure why - so I was really reluctant to try again and only did as I couldn’t use other contraception. Really pleased: no problems having it put in, no more horrible heavy periods, the occasional spot (never had a skin issue before) but this is a pay off I’m happy with.
