I am so confused. Do I need estrogen?

I'm 45. Was on combined pill from age 15 due to horrendous periods (massive flow, fainting etc every single month) No problems with it at all, only came off it when we wanted babies. About 8 years ago I started to have breakthrough bleeding so GP said I'd been on combined pill too long and at my age I needed to be on mini pill. Moved to Azalia and have been on that since.

In the last year or so I just feel like a different person (and not in a good way. I am exhausted. I don't sleep well at all, averaging 4-5 hours a night and it's really taking it's toll (and sometimes I am really sweating when I wake, but not sure if that's a hot flush or not). Also suffering terrible breast pain. I have brain fog but I'm not sure if that's a result of the tiredness or something else. And weight gain Sad I did go to GP about 6 months ago but he was going on about mindfulness and exercise and I left feeling a bit silly.

But I'm no better and I can't really go on like this, though I'm not sure what to ask for. Doesn't my body need estrogen?! If I'm only getting progesterone from the Azalia pill is the idea that my body will produce the estrogen it needs? How do I know it is? Or that its producing enough? Is there a supplement I could/should take that would help? Or should I go back to GP and ask for something else?

I feel like because I've been on the pill for so long I don't have any other benchmark. I haven't had a bleed for 8 years so I can't say there's a difference in my cycle etc. Would love some advice as a starting point, thanks.

At 45 a lot of women start perimenopause and start having irregular periods. Since you are on mini pill you don't have any period and therefore there is no way to say. But if you are in perimenopause your estrogen level will go down and you will feel the effects of low estrogen. Look on the net for symptoms of low estrogen or perimenopause and see how many you can tick. If you think you are in perimenopause then tell your doctor so and ask him for FSH test. If you list your symptoms your GP will connect the dots and start you on low dose hrt which will help you.

Thanks @ahran2k I'll do that 😊

I’m the same age and have been having exactly the same symptoms. The lack of sleep was awful. I’m not on the pill though so could see that my periods had disappeared too. I started oestrogen gel a few weeks ago and the difference is amazing. I had 10 hours sleep last night! Best of luck

That's so good to hear A4!
I'll make an appointment ASAP 👍🏻

Sounds a lot like menopause or perimenopause.

Go to your doctor. Most GPs now don't do a hormone test, they go on symptoms.

I'm the same age, also on the mini pill so no periods and similar symptoms. I'm also getting a lot of itching.
