Mirena and heavy bleeding!

I've had the mirena coil almost 18 months. It settled after about 6 months and since then I've had regular periods that are heavy and quite painful the first day then quickly reduce and end about day 5.

I had a period start on 29th December and it was normal as described above. It ended in the 5th January. But then 10 days later on the 15th I started bleeding and haven't stopped since. The first 8 days were extremely heavy, flooding night time pads, clots the size of large grapes constantly passing, which is very unusual for me. Had one day of lighter flow and now had so far another 2 days of very heavy flow that is showing no sign of stopping. Of the last 28 days I've been bleeding for 20 of them, the last 11 or so days of which have been very heavy.

Phoned sexual health clinic who fitted it, all they could offer was a sit and wait clinic which isn't ideal with 2 small children plus work - I've been before and was there over 3 hours.

Should I go to the doctor? What they do? Just wait it out? I'm not really in any pain just normal cramps, don't need painkillers. It just really weird and starting to make me feel quite down, I've flooded into my (luckily black!) jeans twice in public and it just feels shit. Anyone else experienced this?

I've had this all the time with the mirena, it's coming out in 2 weeks and I can not wait!! I so share your pain and mood, it's horrendous. I do have fibroids though so heavy "outbursts" have been attributed to that. I would make a GP appointment and they'll possibly refer you for an ultrasound scan to check it's still in the right position, and also worth checking you can still feel your strings as it can be "evicted" with heavy bleeding. I thought mine had gone but a scan shows it still there but goodness knows where the strings have gone!

Just to update for anyone who stumbles across this thread. Went back to the clinic that fitted it this morning as still bleeding and been 13 days now. Turned out the mirena was falling out!! The doctor removed it and was able to pop a new one in at the same time. Now back home in a bit of pain but glad to know what the problem is.

Sorry you've had such a bad experience, hope things feel better once it's out!
