Breast biopsy result - the wait is killing me

I’ve had breast pain so was referred to hospital breast clinic. Mammogram was clear, very quick physical exam was clear but ultrasound found a lump, not a cyst.
The chap took 3 samples using a needle and said result available 5-7 days. The consultant said I’d get an appointment within 2-3 weeks to return to him to get results.
After 2.5 weeks (on Tuesday) I called and his secretary said that he’d dictated a letter and she get it to me in a few days. Yesterday, Friday, 3 week mark, I came home to a message from a breast care nurse asking me to phone. I did, to he told they finished at 3.30 and to phone on Mon.
Now I’m really confused and worried.
We would a nurse phone me? Surely if it was the follow up appointment the secretary would do it? I’ve never received a letter.
Surely if my biopsy had shown a result, I’d have been recalled sooner?
Why on earth leave a message on a Fri afternoon, knowing that I wouldn’t be able to speak to them until Monday?
We already have serious illness in the family and this stress is killing me. I’m in Scotland.
Any other experience of this interminable wait?

Sorry you are going through this. I went through exactly the same thing earlier this month and I honestly thought the stress would kill me

I had to keep ringing for results and though the worst when they said the consultants were reviewing the results

Thankfully a nurse rang to tell me it was a fibroadenoma and ash was fine. Most lumps are innocuous but I know what they worry is like x

Hi, were you told result over the phone? I thought they never did that. I did have a sore nipple as well, so have wondered if I had a minor infection which cleared up but left a block behind (clutching at anything).

Yes they told me over the phone... eventually.

They did send letter too a bit later.

My lump was quite sore and tender to the touch.

There are so many possibilities and I'm sure you've googled them all. Did you have an ultrasound?

I want to send you a hug - I had this wait earlier in the year and it was the longest 10 days of my life. Mine was benign and I’m hoping you get that good news too

I went through this a few months ago too. Clear exam and mammogram but lump found on ultrasound although the doctor told me he was certain it was a fibroadenoma the wait for the biopsy result was agonising.

It took nearly 3 weeks, I rung a few times and was told over the phone by the nurse that it was all clear. My colleague who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer was back within a week of her biopsy and I wouldn't imagine they would tell you that over the phone?

Pretty crap that you have to wait all weekend now though, keep busy and hope you get the all clear.

Thanks everybody. I’m hoping that if it was serious, then I’d have heard before 3 weeks but you never know. I feel better hearing that some folk were given the all clear by a nurse over the phone. I automatically assumed the worse when it was a nurse rather than a secretary.
I’ve put it to the back on my mind and Monday will bring what it will (I keep saying to myself).
Glad those of you above were all in the clear.

Hi ComeOnGordon, I did, thanks for asking. The nurse gave me the all clear on the phone, thankfully. It was a Fibroadenoma, I think she called it. Other friends have been called back to get their (clear) results in person so I’m not sure why the nurse called, maybe because I’d already waited a full 3 weeks.
