Birth control & lack of libido

Hi all,

Having recently married the man I love and adore I have found myself very much against the idea of intimacy. The idea repulses me and I couldn't put my finger on it for the last 4 months. Having done some research I found that the cause of this loss of libido could possibly be non other than the implant I've had put in 4 months ago. Up until then, I was fine.

Before I make rash decisions as to whether or not I should take it out, I was wondering... has anyone else experienced this before?

Hey, it’s certainly a side effect for some women, it also might be that your relationship has changed since you married, or the stress / expectations around the wedding changed things.
If you have it removed remember you can fall pregnant immediately if you’re not careful. As it’s a progestagen containing contraceptive I’d suggest a combined poll rather than mini pill if you want a different method - consider asking for cilest, marvelon or femodene if appropriate as they have more oestrogen.
What were you using before the implant?

Thank you for responding. I should have probably mentioned that my husband and I waited till after marriage. What I meant was, before the implant, I was able to feel turned on, I enjoyed kissing and basic touching. But no more since the implant was installed.

There just isn't any clinical evidence to suggest that the implant can cause lack of libido or complete loss in my case which is why I'm hesitant of it's removal. But I can't think of anything else that can explain this.

I had little drive with the implant! Was much higher before it. Having said that it made me moody, bad skin and a week long bleed twice every month

Got the coil in and feeling the same. Bleeding has settled. Longer but lighter but reduced drive again.

My ovaries must feel repressed 😂😂

Hi, I found that the implant completed killed my libido. I realised how important my regular hormonal cycle is in achieving a healthy sex life. I removed it and my libido returned.

Yes it’s quite a common side effect, for all hormonal contraceptives

My first contraception was the injection, after 5 years I moved onto the implant. I had a massive drop in my libido, I thought this was normal and due to us being together so long, we dropped from several times a week to maybe twice a year, and even then i'd to really force myself to get in the mood.

After a few years on the implant I came off all contraception and couldn't believe how quickly my sex drive came back. DH and I have agreed to use condoms from now on as there is no point putting hormones in my body to stop me getting pregnant if the result of them is me not wanting to have sex at all, which pretty much defeats the purpose.

I just wish I'd made the connection sooner, all those wasted years.

DW had lots of issues with libido and mood while on the pill, it was awful really.
Condoms are much better IMO then I had the snip once we'd had the DCs

Yes! I was on the combined pill from 20-28. I didn’t notice lack of libido as I was young and didn’t have a comparison. When I came off contraception my libido went through the roof. I’ve never been back on as started a family then used other methods before DH had a vasectomy. I’m now 48 and can pinpoint my fertile time because my libido becomes very strong.

Thank you for sharing. It's calming to know that this hasn't singled me out alone. I wonder why they don't tell you this when you're getting the implant fitted? Yes it may not have been clinically proven but with the vast amount of women who do experience this, surely you would think they'd mention it?

I was on the pill for decades. Found my sex drive dropped off quite randomly so I didn’t associate it with the pill. Anyway, I came off the pill for other reasons and wham! Sex drive was BACK! I did not expect it at all. Sadly my skin is not as beautiful as it was on the pill though.
