Can I ask for a women practitioner- breast scan

Hi, tomorrow I am having a mammogram at a one stop breast clinic. Can I request female staff?

Yes, but if none are available, what will you do?

A one-stop clinic suggests you are having a lump investigated, and that is usually under the 2week rule. Having to return a different day is clinically undesirable, and prolongs stress for you.

I understood that all mammographers are female. I sure I read it somewhere. Not sure if it is all trusts or just mine.

Most breast radiographers are female. I’ve had dozens of mammograms in breast clinics and they’ve always been female. I think most trusts realise women attending one stop clinics are feeling vulnerable and it’s hard enough having your breast pulled, pushed and squeezed so employ women in them.
The surgeon and radiologist might well be male though but you’ll have a chaperone. Could you take a female friend with you?
Did you not think to ask when sent the appointment?

There were men when I had radiotherapy.

for you tomorrow. I think they only train females for this job too. But you can ask for a chaperone for any procedure too!

Had loads of mammograms ( and a mastectomy), always female radiographers.

I had a male doctor do my examination, same as a male midwife, not an issue if they are medically qualified.

Yes of course you can request a female practitioner. But as everyone has said, our clinic is exclusively staffed by women.
