Tranexamic Avid

I was recently prescribed Tranexamic Acid by my GP. There was no information leaflet in the packet when I collected it from the pharmacy so done a little Google on patient.co.uk

Bit of background - 4 months of significant cramping and passing no blood as such (just a bit of staining) but when going to the toilet I've passed large clots into the toilet. So clots, little actual bleeding.

This is a change for me so went to GP, bloods came back normal it's not hormonal etc etc.

Have been prescribed this medication but now I'm wondering whether it'll just make the clotting worse? I do absolutely intend to go back to my pharmacist for advice when I'm off work but wanted to gauge on MN first. Just seems a little odd that I'm prescribed a medication to promote clotting of menstrual bleeding when I'm already clotting excessively.

I would ask your GP. We are prescribed it for a bleeding disorder and I have to say in the odd occasion bleeding has ceased not changed iyswim?

But, I never take medication unless I understand it so I would ask for some phone advice?

Hmmmm I'm no expert but I thought tranexamic acid was prescribed for heavy periods?
I used to take mefanamic acid- prescribed for excessively painful periods.

I was prescribed tranexamic acid for heavy bleeding with clots, I also got a referral to gynae though and turned out I had a uterine polyp, had it removed and my periods are back to normal. I'd be asking for a referal, you need to find out what's causing it not just mask the symptoms.

I used to take 1000mg up to 4 times a day during my periods.
I was ridiculously heavy.
The medication helped to lighten the periods but I did tend to get more clots.
I had polyps removed twice before having a hysterectomy.

Ok thanks everyone...will not be taking this without a leaflet and will definitely go back to my GP. Will speak to pharmacist first though.

Just seemed really strange I'm prescribed a medication to encourage clotting when that's my issue in the first place Confused I'll end up passing a grapefruit if I take it!
