Transvaginal scan

Just wanted to share the experience I recently had that I was terrified about but nothing to worry about. I was told I would need the scan after a heavy period the scan is literally a probe with a condom on that is inserted into your vagina. Had little it hardly any pain during the scan and it was over in about 15 mins

Was it similar to the up-muff pregnancy scan? What I named the elephant's trunk holding a camera Grin

I had no idea what was going to happen, ok presumed all baby scsns were across the stomach! But it was swift, painless and dignified.

kellyw1989 · 09/09/2019 08:20

Haha yes you could describe it as up muff lol. It was basically like a white probe ( penis shaped ) with a condom covered in lube

I had one of these for an ovarian cyst, no bother at all nothing to be worried about.

kellyw1989 · 09/09/2019 08:23

Exactly, struggled to find it get told much information about it so wanted to say exactly that it was painless

I've just been booked in for one of these and they are also giving me a pelvic scan 😩 I had a smear last week and told the nurse I'm still bleeding between periods, after intercourse, heavy periods and weight loss.
She told me it would be around 4 weeks until they got in touch but they've rang this morning saying they have a cancellation so can get me in on Tuesday.
I am at increased risk of ovarian cancer, does anyone think this is the reason they have got me in so quickly?
Also, who gave you the results?

catnidge · 14/09/2019 06:03

Hi Emily 1990027, the bleeding may be why you are being seen so fast. This happened to me and I have been seen incredibly quickly.
Have you had the smear results yet? Any other tests suggested.
At my scan they were able to tell me what they found but I needed further tests after.
Hope this is helpful. I'm pleased you're appointment is on Tuesday, good luck.

Hi I'm glad to read this thread. I have the two scans on Tuesday and am so worried what they might find. Were all of you ok?

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 14/09/2019 15:50

Hi - just chipping in to tell anyone that is nervous about this: when you have IVF, you have to have this sort of scan multiple times. It's 'affectionately' I known in fertility groups as 'dildocam'. I had (I think) 5 of them during my treatment. They are honestly no bother. Less uncomfortable even than a smear test. Please don't worry about it - it's fine.

PancakeAndKeith · 14/09/2019 15:52

Yep. I had ivf and had the dildo cam loads.
I used to pop out in my lunch hour to have it done every other day at one point.

TJJones1972 · 14/09/2019 16:06

Lol. I'm not so worried about the actual scan, after two traumatic births I'm sure it couldn't be that bad, although it is so good to hear from guys who have actually undergone it! I am worried about results however...

emily199027 · 14/09/2019 21:36

@TJJones1972 I'm worried about the results too 😩 not looking forward to the scan but it's got to be done!
I keep getting that nervous sicky feeling!

emily199027 · 14/09/2019 21:37

@catnidge thank you!
No, they said the smear results would be up to 5 weeks so I've got a while to wait yet.

catnidge · 15/09/2019 04:06

tjjones , I'm sorry to hear you are so worried about the results. If you don't mind sharing can I ask what it is your worried about?
I didn't get good news, although I found this out later from a surgeon not at my scN appointment. I am the exception though and hope this would not be the case for you or emily.

If there are further concerns for either of you, any follow up appointments will come quickly.

TJJones1972 · 15/09/2019 10:06

I'm just worried what they might find and what it might mean. Although to find the cause of pain will be somewhat of a relief. I have an appointment a week later with the doctor. I'm really sorry to hear that you had bad news. How are you now?
