Two week long but unusually light period, what could cause this?

I normally have a very heavy flow of about five days with spotting before and after but this month I had a couple of spots of blood on toilet tissue when wiping just before my period was due then nothing for eleven days and it has been unusually light. For a week it was bright red blood mixed with clear discharge and a few very small clots but only when I wiped and it would stop for hours at a time. During the next week it’s been heavier on some occasions but still only when I wiped after using the toilet, not enough to show on a pad and not every time. Yesterday when I woke up it was very heavy like my usual flow with quite large clots but has slowly down considerably again and is back to being just when I wipe again.
My husband and I were hoping to have a second child so not using contraception but I did do a test when my period was late and there was an extremely faint line but I believe it was an evap line. I did another test about a week later to be sure as I never got a positive test in my first pregnancy and had few instances with bleeding then but it was negative so obviously assume not that.
I will probably have to try get in and see the dr when my sons back at school but I was curious if this had happened to anyone else and what it might be.
