Referral after smear

I had a smear a week ago. The nurse mentioned that my cervix looked a bit red at the time, but that it could be normal cell changes due to my age and having had 3 children.
Today I have had a letter saying that my gp has referred me to gynaecology, but that's all it says! I have booked an appointment for middle of August but they weren't able to tell me any more.
Has anyone had similar who can reassure me so I don't spend the next too weeks in a panic.
I'm already scared as my Auntie passed away a few years ago because of cancer in that area.

I had early cancer cells, picked up on a smear. But it was far less scary in reality than it sounds. I had another smear done in gynae, and an internal examination - then treatment 2 weeks later, called a loop excision done in outpatients under local anaesthetic. It was undignified but not painful at all, and I had 3 monthly smears for around 2/3 years after then yearly and now back to normal 3 years. I've not had any issues since.

Try not to panic, it could also be cervical erosion if it's red. Fingers crossed Flowers

Thank you so much for your quick reply. That sounds very reassuring and I'm glad to hear you're fine now.
I think I'm panicking more because the letter just says I've been referred but not why, I think I could deal with it better if I knew that because now I'm obviously imagining worse case scenarios!
Thank you again, I hope my outcome is as good.
