Nerve damage after an epidural

Has anybody experienced nerve damage after an epidural/local anaesthetic?

Had my son 10 weeks ago and I have had the most awful sensation in my right thigh since then. It feels numb but also feels as though it's burning. The pain also radiates down my leg.

Have seen the GP and she prescribed Naproxen but it isn't doing anything.

I can't deal with this day in day out Sad

It’s extremely rare, but nerve damage is possible (that’s why it’s discussed during the consent process for epidurals and spinals). Most epidural related nerve injuries get better by themselves. About 1:50000 are more permanent. Other things that can cause neurological symptoms around the time of delivery include whether you had a section/assisted delivery, what position you were in, blood loss, other medical problems.

Although there’s not much detail in your post, meralgia paraesthetica also causes thigh symptoms including numbness and burning.

Have you/your GP spoken to anyone on the labour ward you delivered on? There will be an on-call anaesthetist they can talk to/they may be able to find the anaesthetist who put in your epidural to take their advice.

Hi! So sorry you are experiencing this and hope you get better!

I had nerve damage after a failed epidural. It's been a year now and I still experience ringing in my ears - it's so loud! I researched so much about it but there is actually no cure. The doctors seem to not believe it's from the epi but I KNOW it is. I never had this ringing in my ears before birth. After birth I experienced extreme headache and neck pain so they did a blood patch which helped but the ringing ears just won't go :(
