For those who have/have had the Mirena coil, how did you get on with it?

I understand everyone reacts differently to different forms of contraception but Im looking for a general idea of what having one is like

I'm due to get one fitted next month after having my first DC

I've had one since 2012 (replaced 2017) I had some cramps for the first couple of days & since then absolutely nothing, no periods, no PMT. For me it's been great, I stopped using the pill due to migraine & I haven't had one since I switched to Mirena. It's uncomfortable but certainly not ridiculously painful during insertion. Definitely short term pain for long term gain. You'll hear good & bad reports but for me it's been brilliant.

Best thing I ever did. Sure it hurts going in, but seriously it's only for a short time, no need for a general anaesthetic! I had three over 15 years.

Love my mirena- amazing not to bleed! Took about 2/3mths for bleeding to settle down

Thanks ladies! I've got a month to think on it anyway Smile

I had my first one put in last week (search my name and you should be able to find the post).
I was ok on the first day, the second I started getting a bit of pain and some spotting. Same the next day, but Sunday I woke up with horrendous period pains which nurofen hasnt touched. The same today :(
I've had it put in due to heavy periods, and it will be in until menopause is over as I am over 45. That said, if I have this pain for the next 3 weeks, I might be rethinking it. I never wanted one, but as I have anaemia I wanted to see if this helped with that by making the flow lighter. I hope I wake up one morning with no problems, like a pp did.

I'm onto my 3rd so obviously I love it. I had a bit of spotting for a couple of weeks after the first one but nothing since. No periods for about 14 years!!

I have friends who have had a similar experience to me. We all love our Mirenas.

People react in different ways though. I've never really had problems with periods or other contraception. Light regular periods and fine on both microgynon and logynon.

Love the mirena. Had for really heavy periods and now much much lighter. I feel much more calm and no longer have PMT. Have to take the minipill too as was still spotting every day 8 months after having it fitted.

longtompot · 19/06/2019 00:01

Today still heavy bleeding, but not as much pain at all. I hope I sleep better than last night, as it kept waking me up :( But, if today is the start of things picking up, then I would recommend it. So far....

SBeckett · 20/06/2019 21:10

I'd no choice getting the wretched thing in. 8 weeks on and the cramps and spotting are constant. My skin is a mess and I'm so depressed. Wished I'd never consented, at this stage I'd rather they took everything out, 4 years of misery is enough,

louise5754 · 28/06/2019 10:59

I've just done a search on this as last night I pulled mine out.

Seeing a doctor later today.

My periods have been awful since I've had this about 4 years.

Now it's out I won't have it again.

I'm not sure what else I can try though.

I had mirena fitted under GA Oct last year. This was due to acute pelvic pain and abnormal heavy periods. Since I have had it been great. Light periods which only last few days. No period pains or cramps. Just be careful what you eat as it can make you very hungry
