Surgical Stockings after abdominal hysterectomy

Cheddarcheeseandsodabread · 18/05/2019 18:49

I had a full hysterectomy - cervix, tubes, ovaries - at the beginning of April. Was told to wear my surgical stockings for 6 - 8 weeks. Have since looked online and found that advice to be for 10 - 12 weeks.

Does anyone have any experience in this field? Nurse, surgeon. etc?

Happy to wear them as mum died of a stroke in her 40s and my dad died from a blood clot on the lung - so maybe I am being extra cautious.

All thoughts and advice welcome :)

I had a full hysterectomy almost 3 years ago and didn’t wear them at all. They weren’t mentioned to me.

I had a hysterectomy 4 years ago and if I remember rightly I wore them for around 5 weeks, I think.
I do not have a family history of blood clots though. (sorry not very helpful Blush )

I have a family history of blood clots. My dad too died from a pulmonary embolism.

After my c-sections it was 6 weeks of socks and also blood thinning injections for a period of time but can't remember how long for.

Hello. Hope you're feeling better and recovery going okay.
Wear your stockings for as long as advised in your discharge advice. Try to mobilise as much as you can tolerate. Your risk of developing a deep vessel clot reduces dramatically once you are back at baseline mobility. Keep hydrated and move your feet and legs (good toes, naughty toes point and flex at the ankle) when at rest.

Do they know about your family history?
If not, please tell them asap.

Carpet86 Thank you, I also had blood thinning injections to do at home for 10 days.

PintOfBovril Yes, I will definitely keep them on for 8 weeks, also due to see my gynaecologist on 30th of this month for my post-op so will see what she advises also.

endofthelinefinally Yes, they all know about my history - I think I told every health professional that had anything to do with me! Wink

Thank you all for taking the time to answer, much appreciated Smile

Glad to see you had the anticoagulants. That is why I was asking. You definitely need them if you have family history of thrombosis.

Wow. After each c-section it was stockings on for three days and that was it. Same with hysterectomy.
