Periods and potential perimeno...

Hello
Am not sure whether I should know this but don't or its a mystery so I'll ask!

When you are entering peri meno and you have a missed period does your period restart at your next 'expected' cycle or does it just restart whenever it damn well feels like and that becomes your new reset period cycle?

I last had a period 7 weeks ago, 5 weeks ago I had one day of spotting on wiping. Have been to GP, am awaiting smear test results etc. I'm mid 40s so GP and I discussed that it could just be hormonal and start of peri... plus am very stressed at moment as my sister has been diagnosed with cervical cancer (our other sister died from cancer 2 years ago and our mom died from cancer 2 years before that) so could just be my body having a momentary freak out.. Oh and am not pregnant.

But if it is peri-meno, what usually happens - back on normal cycle, start new cycle or just randomness from hereon in?
