Intermittent use of ADs for PMS

Hello

I have been diagnosed with moderate PMS. Two weeks of a four week cycle are a raging bloated hell for me and my family. I have a sensitivity to progesterone so the Pill doesn’t work... just makes me worse. I have now been prescribed intermittent use of fluoxetine. I should take 10mg for the two weeks that I go crazy.

I have been on citalopram 10mg before for anxiety. I was on it for 9 months and then stopped as I felt better (and I’d put on a stone). However, when I first started to take citalopram I really had bad side effects - two weeks of feeling off the planet, high as a kite, grinding teeth and yawning, and insomnia. I’ve had a similar experience when I’ve tried to take sertraline before.

My question is, has anyone else been prescribed this form of treatment for pms? If so, did you have side effects from the ADs, and did those side effects repeat every time you started the two week course, or overtime, did you become less sensitive and have reduced side effects?

I hope this makes sense! PMS / PMDD is such a tough thing to live with. I’m desperate for a solution...

Thanks

Hi, it dosnt sound like Moderate to me sounds flipping awful! I get depressive PMS but not very bad every month. Started taking AD for week before period is due and seem to have helped. In fact as cycle is changing and getting shorter my body seems to know when to start taking them even if it’s like 12 days before I’m due not 7.

I was concerned as you aren’t supposed to start stop but had no problems at all, it says all over pack. Guess it’s not a super high dose. I do get some strange dreams sometimes that seem real but think that’s common side effect. But nothing physically.

I can’t take hormonal things either, and tried some other AD for Nerve pain that really didn’t agree with me. I take prosac and it’s so much better. Good luck with yours.
