Anemia

I have pregnancy anemia and was prescribed iron about 2 weeks ago by the midwife.

However it just doesn't seem to be working, I actually feel worse than before. How is this possible?

I'm sleeping pretty much all the time, I really feel as though my energy levels just don't even exist anymore and it's getting me down. Some days I feel fine and others I can barely function.

Is it just a case of upping the dosage?

Thanks all

I'm in the same boat. Started my iron 1 week ago and no improvement yet. I am getting dizzy and have blurred vision so not much fun and going to bed so early!

Did they say to get checked again if there's no change? Can you call your midwife?

Also, did they check your ferritin levels too?

Pinkybutterfly · 27/03/2019 18:36

Are you taking the tablets with orange juice? You can also ask for the liquid version say you can't tolerate tablets n see...

@burblife nothing mentioned about ferritin levels. Should I ask for those to be checked also?

Seeing MW on Wednesday so if nothings improved by then I'll tell her. It's so exhausting Sad

@Pinkybutterfly no, should I be? I currently take them with water or a bit of milk

Advice I was given was to take with orange juice as vitamin c helps absorption. Milk and tea can prohibit absorption so leave an hour or so between taking tablets and drinking those things.

Ferritin is the amount of iron stored in your body rather than the amount in your blood. I wondered whether you'd need a higher dose if both levels were low?

They were considering an IV infusion of iron for me as ferritin is low but they decided on tablets to start with.

Can you speak to the midwife again?
