Smear test on period?

I was due my smear test in Jan but cancelled it as I started my period the day before. I've recently started taking the contraceptive pill again after a break from it, and I'm also breastfeeding, so my periods are not regular but seem to be happening quite a lot! I booked in for smear again in Feb, but cancelled for the same reason. I have managed to get a third appointment this Friday but have started my period again today. Will they do a smear? I don't want to put it off any longer.

Thanks in advance to those who might know

I don't think so. Can the blood not contaminate the sample?

Its so unpredictable at the moment, not sure what to do!

No they won't do a smear whilst you are having a period. Speak to the Practice Nurse about the problem and they may be accommodating and flexible in that you can ring them when you are period free and they may be able to slot you in at short notice.

I've been told it has to be mid cycle, would be great if I knew what my cycle was!

If you don't know when your cycle will be then any time is fine as long as it's not on your period. I don't have cycles at the moment and I was told any time is ok

I have had 2 smears when light bleeding - I was told they may not be clear enough, but both times came back with results.

Probably if the flow is heavy then I would postpone....
